• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Moulting metal ?

I have a somewhat expensive clamp from Felder for my Hammer C3-31 combi. It's very handy for those odd occasions but I'd not used it for quite a while. I found that the arm wouldn't slide easily up the vertical column and on closer inspection, it looks as if the metal has started moulting.

As you graunched the arm upwards you can see this powder that gets scraped off.

The whole metalwork has developed a grey patina

Any ideas ?

I understand that it's cold up north but that's extreme!

I honestly haven't got a clue Roger, That's very unusual indeed, it looks a bit like some kind of paint overspray? Maybe dried lithium grease?

Don't think so. Almost as if it has leached out of the metal.

It's just strange that it also appears to be on the painted lever handle, and the castings, and it all appears to be coming from one side. I'd understand if it was just on the steel parts exclusively but it seems like it's on everything.

I see what you mean. Will have a closer look tomorrow. The metal is definitely tarnished. I'll contact Felder on Monday to see what they think.

If the clamp is some sort of aluminium alloy, could it be galvanic corrosion?

Have a look at this Wikipedia article for an example of aluminium corroding in contact with iron (3rd picture down)

Spot on, Andy. Chap over on FOG explained it thus ...

Yep that’s a galvanic reaction between two dissimilar metals.
Probably due to condensation caused by regular changes in temperature. The two metals react differently to temperature change and so you get a condensation buildup which doesn’t evaporate as it’s trapped within the joint. If it hasn’t caused too much erosion it will clean up nicely, then use a tin of hard wax furniture polish on all content surfaces and polish off. You’ll find this application once or twice a year will solve the problem and keep things moving smoothly.
I guess it’s kept in an unheated building, I have similar issues and a little more servicing is required!

yes those metal don't like each other....
often also found with stainless....endless problems on windturbines....st/steel and cast iron....
just keep a little WD40 or similar around.....that work a treat......

for fixings (nuts n bolts) I use brass where poss for long service items....but always use a drop of eng oil on assembly regardless of the material........
just getting old.....
