• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi All,
As many will know, Nick was involved in a pretty horrific accident a few weeks ago and was in an induced coma for around ten days.
He was moved from Southmead hospital in Bristol to Frenchay on the outskirts of Bristol where they still retain a specialised brain injury rehab unit so I popped along to see him this afternoon.
To say I was amazed at how he has recovered is an understatement! He seemed no different from the time I worked alongside him when he edited Good Woodworking and equally as quick witted and chipper as before.
He is still very keen to escape the confines of hospital but now he has been told the extent of what happened he's realised that he has to recouperate fully before he's fit enough to leave, which he reckons may be in the next couple of weeks.
While I was there it was brilliant to see that despite his close call, his passion for woodwork and the woods themselves still remains.
He was about to go off to the woodland around the hospital when I arrived to get a hazel sapling that he'd spotted on a previous walk that would have struggled to survive where it was and he wanted to replant in the hopital grounds, so off we both set with a spade and a bucket to bring it back!
How he found it i'll never know - I struggle to find my way around streets with a map, but Nick went off through little winding woodland paths, and sure enough, found it, and dug it up - I even took a pic with his camera of him doing it so that he can use it in a forthcoming issue of Living Woods!
It's great to see him so well after what could have been so different an outcome - Keep up the good work Nick!

cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks for joining, and thanks for sharing that. Until a couple of weeks ago I was completely unaware of Nicks situation and was shocked when I heard, so it's great to hear he's on the mend.

Pass on my, and the forum's regards and best wishes when you speak to him next please.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Andy,
Great to see you here. Thanks for the update on Nick, I am so pleased to hear he is making good progress. [emoji41]
His enthusiasm for all things wood is catching, having seen him with a crowd at a show making his helicopters, the kids large and small are drawn in. [emoji2]

Thanks for the welcome guys - glad to be here!
It's certainly a remarkable recovery - I have been kept in the loop about his situation and his progress etc from a couple of days after the accident and I was certainly fearing the worst from initial info on what had happened.
He's certainly a very resiliant bloke!
Had to laugh when I asked today if he had a helmet on at the time (knowing full well he would say no... And duly confirmed!)
He said he's now invested in some sort of rock climbing helmet that he can use for chainsaw work, bike riding... he said he thinks the bike helmets look stupid! After what he's been through you'd think looking stupid would be low on the list of priorities! :)

cheers,
Andy

Terrible tale with what seems to be a happy ending on the way. I met a dutch cyclist yesterday who was on a recuperation ride. After an argument with a car he broke 3 vertebrae, 1 collar bone, 10 ribs and was in a coma for 12 days. He looked as fit as a fiddle and was still hoping to do mount ventoux later in the year.

So I am sure there is no reason why Nick should not be back on his bike soon

Thanks for letting us know Andy, and it nice to hear that he is well on the mend.

Thanks for the good news about Nick

I know there's some conflicting opinions about helmets but I think something is better than nothing?
A friend of mine fell off his bike whilst walking it (he was pushing another one too at the time!) - head hit the kerb and he finished up paralysed from the waist down. He wasn't wearing a helmet.

On another note I came across the bump caps that Toolstation etc sell for about £6 - the're great when messing about fixing things?

Wish him all the best and a speedy recovery from me please mate.

Yours,
fred

Thanks for the update on Nick Andy. Glad to hear he is much better. I too have to agree with Nick about cycle helmets they look so stupid! You would think they would make them more appealing so more people would want to wear them. I do think Nick will do in the future though.

That really is good news. Glad to hear of his rapid recovery. Must be the sawdust in his blood. :D Hi Philly, long time no see. :D

Not only did I know nothing of the original injury, I also didn't realise that Nick (and others here) are seriously into cycling too. Whilst woodworking has taken a back seat over the last couple of years for me, I have racked up getting on for 5,000 miles on my bike in that time.

I wish Nick a full and speedy recovery, and I hope he is back on his bike ASAP. I don't ascribe as much magic to the helmet as some, although I never ride without it. I hope no-one, including Nick, has need to thank their headgear for many years to come.
