• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Just in case there are others out there who pay as much attention to these things as I do.

All applications in the Office for Mac 2011 suite are reaching end of support on October 10th, 2017. As a reminder, after that date there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options or technical content updates

If it wasn't for the kids using the Mac more and more I probably wouldn't bother updating to Office for Mac 2016. But I guess I will have to now.

No point in me ranting about the business model behind these things.
 
Seems like all software is moving from purchase to subscription.

used to be they stopped giving updates and new features to get you to buy an upgrade. now they want you to buy a subcription and pay regularly to keep the software active.

So far I'm only paying monthly for Lightroom and photoshop. The amount is comparable to buying upgrades each year....but i probably wouldn't have upgraded every year.
 
We can't moan at the whole industry.

I've been using Sketchup for more than a year now at no cost, with regular updates.

I also deal in data and use Tableau to create visualisations and maps of the data at no charge and with regular updates.

I suspect there must be others, too.
 
I use a PC (Win 10) and a MacBook and fortunately since retirement have not had to be forced to stick to Office.
I use Office 2007 on the PC and for a time used VMWare to use it on the Mac, now I use Open Office.
I stopped upgrading Photoshop at CS 4 or 6? When Adobe switched to subscription.
My two younger Granddaughters, both use MS software at school and they have a fairly powerful and relatively cheap (£300) Lenovo laptop each.
The elder of the two has to use an iPad at School too for some of her lessons.
My 2009 MacBook (I use mainly for video editing using fcpx) cannot be upgraded anymore so I’ll just stick to what’s on it now.
Nowadays I use my smartphone much more than my computers anyway.

:text-+1: Libre Office - me. I have the absolute costs of my 'shop build on their Calc spreadsheet.

And if I can plot geolocations from a spreadsheet into Tableau for mapping visualisation, for which in my old job I used MSO and MapInfo, then LO and Tabl can't be bad.

I do have Libre office on the Mac as well but we have run into compatibility problems in the past. As a stand alone product it is great but if you do have to transfer a document to MS word there always seems to be formatting issues.
 
I haven't had any problems Saving As docx in LO and opening in MO.

I create in LO and save as MSO file and send to fellow consultants and my previous employer, and I've received no complaints of format issues.

The problems I can remember centred around bullet point marker positioning and text boxes with photos in documents my wife was working on from home on the Mac and at work on a PC. This was a while back now so I guess my fears could be groundless but once bitten and all that.
 
often format errors / anomalies can be fixed by exporting in a different format, and importing to MS.

Think of it like an old car .. they have characters, once you know how to drive them , they are fine.

For me .. I use all kinds of file formats for CAD CNC and laser etc. most softwares react in their own way to various file formats. Once you know a language they both agree on , all is good :-)

a commonly used trick for office type files is to save in an old MS format , and just open that in MS.
 
Microsoft Word was good up until they bought out the version for Windows 7 then it was pants on a PC. Where I worked at the time productivity of office staff fell through the floor when they were forced to "upgrade". I won't have Microsoft products on my Mac these days not just because of cost but also security issues. Open Office works fine for us but we always export to PDF if we need to share a document.
