• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Is it really 30+ C in Brittany ?

Up here, it's FSW and MFR. W is weather and R is rain...I'll let you fill in the rest. The temperature here is a half of what it is down further south. 11 bleedin' degrees. In July :o

LOML is in despair as she has discovered a fungal infection now on her peonies. Never, ever had it before nor heard of it. But a bit of research plus telephone calls to various growers and experts here and over in Europe suggests that the climate here is just right for fungal growth. To say she is in despair is an understatement.

That plus more bitey things in the air then I've ever seen and of a ferocity to bring a grown man weeping to his knees. They scoff at insect repellent sprays...even the Jungle Juice that we took to the Far East.

Bastard part of the country. :evil:

We are in the middle of winter, 21c at lunch time, some clouds, no sign of rain .............

They're forecasting 30 C here today, and the way it's started, they might be underestimating. The wheat looks like it'll be ready to harvest in about a fortnight. The tarmac in the lane outside my house lies in bubbles and lumps after melting in the heatwave a week or two back. You lot need to move south!!

(Well, not you Phil. Moving south is something of a wet option for you! :) )

Avon Skin-so-Soft.

It's a skin moisturiser. We took it to Scotland on our end-to-end bike ride to ward off the midges, and it worked. I thought I'd give it a try in Zambia against the tsetses, and it worked. Best of all, it's pleasant to aplly and wear, unlike the normal Deet-based poisons. The SAS have taken to using it apparently.

Nonetheless, you'll come to realise eventually why that neck of the woods is virtually devoid of people. :) Move south!!!
 
Our friendly hosts in a recent self catering cottage lent us the Avon So Soft - it does work!

Oh and as for the weather, I have a father in law like you. We live in Kent he lives in Gwynedd and he tortures himself comparing the weather forcasts :lol:
 
Roger, imagine when the winter arrives matey... Mrs P's daughter lives up your way and the winters are pretty darn nippy.

Personally, I can't see the enjoyment of being too hot. Yes, I like the sunshine (prefer winter sun to summer sun) but I can't stand the heat anymore - used to love it, but now hate it. Makes me right grumpy. :x

Mrs P would move up there tomorrow if she could. She would love to be close to her daughter and granddaughter. I'm going up there with her in November for the first time. We're going to drive because I don't like flying. She's asked me about the possibilities of permanently moving up there.... I haven't said 'no', but I can't see it happening although it isn't totally out of view.

I did say to Mrs P about popping in to see you guys when we travel up (if we are welcome of course :lol: ), but we're only staying one night apparently.

During November, if you see a strange couple walking around your estate and there's a yellow mini parked on your drive, it might be us. :lol:
 
How far south do midges occur? - we used to get them in Yorkshire at times but not badly. Camping in Scotland 50 odd years ago was terrible - I used to puff on a pipe which kept them out of the tent.

Another user of the Avon lotion - great stuff.

Rodger - peonies, I've got one, lovely flowers but they only last about a week. Does your collection flower over a period?

My wife has a wide variety that flower at different times. Usually over a two month spell.

You should deffo moved south Roger if you want the sun.

Once again this quarter's solar generation readings have been queried by Scottish Power and I have had to send photos of the meter to prove we have generated so much.
It has been that warm here that the air conditioning (ironically powered by free solar power) has been running most days.

Oh I'm not complaining, Kirk. I love the heat. Don't forget that our heat is a humid heat (we'll often have 80+% humidity on summer's day), andit's over 95% at the moment.. I drove across the Sahara without air con, and my car in Zambia doesn't have it either. A few years back travelling in the Kimberlies in NW Western Australia we bumped into a guy burning off ahead of a bushfire, who said ..."Good job it's not hot or we'd struggle to get this one under control". It was 46C in the shade at the time.

There was a very strange yellow thing in the sky yesterday for a few seconds. Not sure what it was.
 
Roger, you're welcome to some of my heat down here - it's been in the mid 20s for the last few days and well into the 30s in my workshop. It's like a sauna in there! Not much woodturning going on at the moment... :cry:

Going by the smell of it, I reckon the 'SAS use it' is an urban myth. They usually refrain from any sort of man-made smell, deodorants etc when they are out in the field in case the smell gives their presence away.
