• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Just started the upgrade to OSX 10.9. Backups taken and application upgrades downloaded. Just as well I have the iPlod in case it all goes belly up.
 
So far so good.

It was a pain to get rid of Office 2004 as the uninstaller would not load. Office 2011 installed no probs.
The genealogy software also seems to be OK at the mo.
Had difficult getting widgets to float on top but now sorted and spend ages finding my WEP key apart from that no problems spotted so far.

I've left the scroll wheel the wrong way just to see if anyone else in the family notices.
 
Please don't blame me when it all goes t*ts up!

WIn XP and office 97 works just fine here. I cannot understand this lemming like dash for latest OSs

Just look at all the problems that Apple phone iOS 8 has caused - up to ver 8.2 within days I understand.

iOS 6 here and I'm refusing prompts for iOS6.1

If it ain't broke why fixit?

Totally agree with this sentiment but I wanted the added functionality of using iCloud to view and update and sync iCal from non Apple devices. So far so good.
 
Sometimes you have to upgrade when software Cos. stop updating older versions?
I take photos in RAW format which Canon amended, in that it would no longer work in CS2 - I had to upgrade to CS4 to keep using it!

How's it going, Andy? If you don't like the new Mail layout (I don't) then there is the option to go for the classic look. I'm not a fan of the new calendar layout. In the old calendar, highlighting an event brought up a small window displaying all the settings (repeat, alarm etc). That doesn't happen in the new calendar...you have to click again on the date after you have double-clicked the item.

Dictation is rather good. You can speak into the Mac directly just as I am doing now and it's rather good.

So far so good. nobody has complained about the mouse going the wrong way. Parental controls have needed resetting but no big deal. Missus keeps the calendar upto date and no complaints yet.
I do not use Mail much, prefer to stick with yahoo, but have to agree the layout looks odd. How do I change back to classic.

Where is the dictation doodah then?
 
I've just checked - I'm on 10.9.5 and never noticed any problems except that my hard drive is nearly full!
Going to upgrade it to a 1Tb one for £70 - according to my Grandson it's a very easy operation?

Richard I've ordered a Seagate 1Tb SSHD @ £70 - SSD ones were over £200?
Unless I've missed a cheaper one?

Talking of speech recognition reminds me of when I worked for Logica and speech recognition was in its infancy. All products required a lot of 'teaching' first before being of much use. Logica had developed one that was, allegedly, speaker independent but with a very limited vocabulary. We had a small exhibition stand which featured this system driving a slide projector. Programmed to 'Focus In' 'Focus Out' and 'Change Slide'.

This American rolled up and said in a Texan drawl 'Change Slide'. Nothing happened. He tried again. The same result. 'Focus In'. Nada. 'Focus Out'. Nothing. "Goddam Limey piece of s**t', he muttered as he wandered off.

Enter a City gent, pinstripe suit, furled umbrella who, in precisely enunciated tones said 'Focus In'. It focussed in. 'Focus Out'. It focussed out. "Nothing wrong with it" he replied.

£200? Blimey, I couldn't find one that low in price. Even at £200 that's steep.

Rod fitted a hard drive with a small ssd, these are a 1/4 of the price of a true ssd but whilst fast in comparison
if you have the bucks to spare a full SSD is gob smackingly fast. There are many 1TB SSD brands sub £240 out there.

Well the £70 one is now fitted and working well - it took about 10mins to swop and in the end 2hrs to transfer the old data ( it initially said 9hrs but that came down very quickly).
I made a Mavericks 10.9.5 Boot- up disc on a new USB Flash drive, but that gave error messages when I tried to use it on the new HD.
In the end I used Time Machine to transfer my old drive data across which worked fine.
I'd still like to make a Boot-up Recovery disc but how can you check it's OK without trying to use it - ie will using it remove/alter a working hard drive?

Rod, you do know that Mavericks installs a Recovery Disk on your hard drive so if the actual Mavericks OS goes belly up then you can boot from the Recovery Disk and re-install Mavericks.

For my part, I use SuperDuper to make a fully bootable clone of my hard drive. This is made on an external drive and so if the actual internal drive goes belly-up then I can boot up from the external drive.
 
Actually Rodger, once you've installed the latest Mavericks successfully it removes the Recovery Disc from your system.
Plenty on the web about it.
The only way to make one is to do it immediately after you've downloaded the upgrade.
I've now made two - one using Diskmaker X and the other using Terminal.
But how can I check them out as I don't wish to reboot or do a recovery as everything is working OK?

I booted up using Time Machine on my old drive which successfully transferred all my old data across.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, Rod. I'd seen the Recovery 10.9.4 disk as an optional boot device but when I went to try it out, it just hung there with the Apple prompt. Good job I have the SuperDuper drive! Thats a shame they removed that facility. I wonder why? Now all I need do is try and find a way to remove the errant recovery disk image.
 
I have a 500gb Lacie drive and back up everything via Carbon Copy Cloner every week. have only had to recover once when the old iMac died and it was a doddle.

As for photos I choose about 30 odd pics a year and get them printed into a small book from Photobox. The rest are either on Photobucket or Picassa. And of course backed up to the Lacie drive

Music, I don't have a great deal, is still on CDs, and the iPlod and the Lacie.
 
The Recovery Disk takes up 5.4Gb so I suppose removing it frees up that space?

When I've made discs using Windows it used to do a verify check but the Mac doesn't seem to do that? Finding out that you've got a duff disc when you are trying to do an emergency repair/boot-up is not good?

When I can find it. So far I have drawn a blank. Googling 10.9.5 and Recovery Disk doesn't seem to throw up anything though so curious where you got your info from.

Er Dunno :oops:

I guess not. But will have to read the manual later. When my old iMac died I just used it to recover all the old applications, files, images etc
 
Excellent article, thanks Rod.

Andy reading the article it would appear that CCC does not now make the backup drive bootable. I strongly urge you to consider SuperDuper as it means you can boot up from that drive should your internal drive need attention.
 
I downloaded SuperDuper from Cnet and despite choosing a manual download and un-clicking all the boxes, it still downloaded an annoying machine check software!!

I wanted to turn some videos by 90 degrees earlier and I knew that I had written some notes about this last I needed to do so.
So I opened the Notes app and there was nothing there! Had Mavericks deleted everything. Searched around a bit and found many other users who had lost their notes after Mavericks upgrade. All the solutions revolved around iCloud or Time Machine, I use neither - stuffed.
So I had a cup of tea.
Then I realised that I had kept all of these useful snippets as Stickies and not Notes. Phew!

Videos turned easily on MPEG Streamclip.
