• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

PC Probs... my favourite subject - cough couch.

Good points, Dave, although I'm not sure if the line logs are stored in the router. I wonder if Paul's router is OK? Just a thought although, like you, I lean towards a line fault or cabinet equipment fault or contention.

I've had my fair share of exotic gremlins in the past.

A dodgy channel in our local mobile mast which, if you got it when you made a call out, made the conversation unintelligible. Took EE a while to (a) recognise that there was this fault and (b) fix it.

A dodgy router. It would quite happily pass a 1k test file using FTP but ask it to send anything much bigger and it would refuse to play ball. However, all the symptoms seemed to point to the remote server. Took over a week to sort out on and off and I can still remember the pleasure as I wielded that lump hammer.

Hello Peeps. Well, this is becoming a non laughing JOKE! Mrs P hasn't really been able to use the internet during the day because it kept freezing on her, and since I returned home from work, it took about an hour to open my emails. Meanwhile, I've tried several times to get in here as well.

I telephoned EE and was naturally put through to the call centre in India. Nowt wrong with these chaps - they're doing their job, but most of my answers were "Sorry mate, can you say that again please." until eventually, I was saying "I ain't gotta clue what you're talking about pal."

I did get a rough idea of what he was saying - it was all a load of horse ****!!

I asked several times, why EE can't just send out a new updated router to me. The Indian chap continuously avoided the question and wanted to put me through to sales for an upsell. I told him I didn't want that. I just wanted an internet service which runs reasonably well for the £30 I pay to EE every month

EE couldn't give a flying monkey's testicle. The Indian chap still wanted to put me through to sales to upsell fibre to me. So, I thought okay, let's ask him how much extra it would cost a month. I must have asked him 5 times and he couldn't or wouldn't answer me. He then transferred me to sales. I waited on hold for 17 minutes listening to a load rhino's poo and then, I hung up.

So, the short of the long is either put up with being taken for a fool, or spend more money with the company who's already taking you for a ride, in order to get what you should be getting anyway.

I am so drained with this, I could go and jump on a camel and ride into town shouting "My camel has seriously got the HUMP and he WANTS TWO PINTS OF LAGER AND A PACKET OF CRISPS PLEASE!"

Thanks again for your help chaps.

Dave, DT10 0BB is about 4.5 - 5 miles away from us. So the new exchange isn't in our village then. I'm not surprised.

Roger, can I borrow your lump hammer please?

I'll phone EE again tomorrow. I was meant to be working out a bunch of materials tonight - but no chance of that now, I'm too exhausted. I think I'll take Jeremy-the-Camel out for a trot instead.

Why don't you politely escalate it and ask to speak to a manager ?

Yes, I think I'll do that tonight.

But before 8pm

Why don't you ditch EE and go to Zen ?

"In a recent Which? survey, Zen was the only broadband provider to score five stars across the board for the quality of its call centres – having been surveyed on waiting time, complexity of the phone menu, staff knowledge, politeness and helpfulness.

Earlier in the year it scored higher than any of the ‘Big Four’ providers for customer service, by more than 25 percentage points."

Morning Paul

Dave, DT10 0BB is about 4.5 - 5 miles away from us.

At that distance, you probably won't get a better bit rate using your existing circuit. However, it should be reliable, and an investigation of the stat's should show if this is the case.

The green cabinet you mention above probably holds the equipment to feed the local cabling to your house. Broadband will be fed into it over fibre, so the length of the metallic cabling will be less and your bit rate will increase.

Keep talking to EE and escalate it as Roger says.

Cheers

Dave

You could also press to be put through to Level 2 support as they are the guys who have access to line records etc and IIRC are based in the UK.

If you are 5 miles from the exchange your speed will be low and you are having problems with EE getting it improved. So fiber is the way to go (if available) you can probably up grade on line but if you want the best price be polite and firm with sales mentioning the very poor service they provided not taking the first offer.
You should get an estimate of line speed from this process and can use this info if it does not conform in the future.

Do you mean FTTH? Do you have any idea on what the likely speed improvement might be (if any) if one had to rely on copper from the cabinet to the home wrt distance from the cabinet? Reason for asking is that Fastershire are busily installing fibre but for many of us, it won't be FTTH as we're too rural.

Copper cable has capacitance its in effect two plates with insulation between, this attenuates the signal/data. Fiber to the cabinet that is the cabinet with the ventilation will be adjacent to the existing cabinet nearest to you, the copper pair is diverted through the fiber equipment cabinet and picks up the web, then its existing copper for the distance to you. Shorter the better but they can give you a speed figure lets say 5 times the old speed. The data over the existing copper is split into channels continuously monitored and only the best are used so tends to preform better on the existing copper and is more resilient to interference.

As an alternative solution..
What are the costs of ditching the land line and going on an unlimited data sim only phone contract? Bung the sim in a decent tablet and away you go. Will need a good 4G signal mind.

Or simply use your mobile phone for tethering using that SIM.

Just checked 3 and it's £20 a month BUT they put a cap on using any SIM as what they call a personal hotspot aka tethering. No good for watching lots of films online. We easily got through nearly 50GB one month when we were trialling Netflix and NowTV - both cancelled as the choice available was not our taste.

Okay Chaps, I tried to do some research before phoning EE, but, as you can imagine, the research was very very slow! That's very.............. very............... slow.

So here's how the call went....

Ring-ring... ring-ring.... ring-ring.......................

After going through all the boring automated stuff, I was greated by a Geordie lad who spoke fully understandable English - well, sort of. Bliss. ;)

ME: "Now look here." I said in a polite, but authorititive voice. (I had my telephone voice on you see) "My wife and I are pretty darn upset with EE - in fact, it wouldn't be too harsh to say, we're darn discomposed considering the circumcisions of EE's nature to us!"

GEORDIE LAD: "Wae'aye man! Lets see wat we canny do f'ya pet."

.............................................................................
Right, that's enough of my blithering old silly stuff.

Long short of it is (or is t'other way round), we are still in contract (I wasn't 100% sure, but now I know) and I've just upgraded to a new 18 month contract - 38Mb/s unlimited fibre broadband, anytime calls to UK landlines, 1000 mins to mobile phones and 1000 mins to international calls - £29.45 including VAT. That's almost a squid cheaper to what I'm paying now!

A new router is on its way.

I might take up Morris Dancing.

Morning Paul

It's nice when you can stop banging your head against thewall, isn't it ?

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks chaps.

We're now up and running with fibre optic and it's already much much faster - bliss. But they say it will take up to 10 days before the best speeds and stability are established.

I'm curious to know why anyone needs more than 6Mbps. TV seems to stream just fine so why the fuss about any higher speed? Most times any delay when browsing is seems to be due to the remote server being overloaded and slow in responding.

Downloading 3 Gb of windows 10 or other software in sensible time?

Just been through a pain barrier trying to clone my wife laptop drive to a SSD and finding various clone softwares didn't work on Dell drives. clone software tends to be 500Mb+ each time. Downloading that in under a minute helps.

We can also have a few things going on at the same time using the connection so faster is better here. I have 100mbs down but only 5up. there are times when better upload speed would be nice.

Downloading 'stuff' Roger. On my 20Mb connection I can download a 3Gb file in around 22 mins from peer to peer networks, on 6Mb that would be around 75 mins. A world of difference if you're looking to download a movie to watch that evening, or a TV episode that's no longer on catchup.

Also when downloading El Crapitan for example at 6.4GB, the difference between 45 mins and nearly 3 hours.

For 'normal' users I would totally agree, 6-10 is more than enough, but there are many of us that are extremely abnormal

I hear what you guys are saying but none of those downloads are exactly time critical, are they? Bit of planning and all that !!

or in our case .. with the kids having internet in their rooms .. multiple internet use can put a strain on the connection.

We're with plusnet and recently upgraded to Fibre as our speed was rubbish (for us) .
we're right on the outskirts of the city but are now getting 60MB on the speed test

My workshop is approx 50m from the house, and I use a cheap powerline adapter and get about 20MB here
so all happy for now :-)

Plusnet have been great , and have UK staff !

before that we had BT and it was awful  we'd often be without internet at all for 2-3 days , and the overseas call center was terrible .. just reading down the list of things to try , that you know by heart ! but you still have to humour them to get to the next level ! grrrrr !!!

Cheers Mark, I tested the speed a few days ago and we're apparently getting 37mbs. It is much faster, but this varies through the day and evening. We've experienced a couple of very slow moments and a freeze jobby too. I'm going to phone EE in a few days with a few questions. BUt, overall, much better to what it was. 8-)
