• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Axminster had these for black Friday and my local store still has one left. I know it is a budget machine

Robust cast iron construction
Cool running 250W induction motor
5 speeds 600 to 2,500rpm
Belt cover micro switch for safety
Table tilts 45° left and right

Is it worth £99 ? I have been looking for a used bench top pillar drill for some time.
 
No is my honest answer. I had perform stuff from Axminster when I was fist starting out. Unless the quality has improved considerably I would avoid this and save for their hobby range.

StevieB I understand what you are saying I will go back to watching the used adds while saving for one of the hobby range. I would like the one with the rack and pinion table adjustment but it is way more than I wanted to spend.
If anyone sees anything suitable in the North East please let me know.
 
They paid a premium at the last place I worked to get a JET bench drill. It was surprisingly bad. The base and table looked like they’d been machined with a blunt fly cutter. The column was a very thin wall steel tube probably no more than 3mm wall thickness. As a comparison my old Progress number one has a solid steel column. It depends on your location of course but I’d suggest you physically go and see the type of machine you plan on getting and have a play with it. Alternatively have a look to see what’s available second hand. English made bench drills are often available at a good price and are far superior in quality provided it’s not badly worn.
 
I am still looking for a pillar drill and Axminster have reduced this model to just under £50 actually less than the Aldi one.
 
Thanks Bob I appreciate your advice even if it is only a temporary measure it will be better than my Dads old bosch drill on a black and decker stand which is what I am using.
Roger you are correct it is way outside of my budget also the three phase power requirement is a non starter.

My FIL had a Fobco floor standing pillar drill which looks just excellent to me. He died at the weekend, so no doubt I'll be looking to shift it in the next few weeks or months. If you're happy to wait, it might be just what you're after. It's in Leicestershire.
 
Mike I am sorry to hear about your FiL I am sure you have other things to consider right now let me know when you are ready.
 
I wouldn’t let three phase put me off. I ran my old three phase mill on single phase with no problems but you could easily replace the motor for a single phase unit if it’s in budget.
