Pictures from an old WIP - Dining chair test and batch

The dates on the pictures are from 2010 so it was a while ago.

The text explaining the pictures was lost with WH1 so here are the pictures only. I'll add the odd word or 2 here and there for what I remember!

First lot were about making 1 off as a trial and making lots of jigs for the rest along the way.

I remember saying so at the time and will say so again. To produce a one off of such quality is something, to repeat the feat many times over is something else.
I think the repetitive nature of doing the same thing so many times would have done my head in.

All 10 chairs are currently arranged around the table. The table has been further extended with the top from the now defunct table in picture 44.

11 for xmas dinner so 1 borrowed chair to come too.

So imagine the table in 44 above joined to the end of this one

and you can see we have a long table

I just went through these agin, and I know I have commented before, but my word this is impressive work! If I were able to produce something like this at some point in the future that would definitely count as a benchmark of skill and craftsmanship in my book, bravo sir! :eusa-clap:

Nice. Extremely nice.

I liked the upholstery shots. I've never done that, and always considered it kind of a black art.

Chairs are hard. Lots of angled M&T joints, lots of oddball sized pieces. And if you go too thick on the parts, they look really clunky. These are great.

A very nice wip but you really need to add your comments to the pictures. I can understand you maybe being a bit reluctant to spend the time but it's very comprehensive regarding pictures and will certainly help anyone contemplating making a chair or even a run of chairs.

I have been looking at chair designs as we are considering a small set for home. Looking at what you have done I really have no excuse to sit on my hands and need to get on with it.

You have a nice design there, I really like the elegant shape of the rear legs. Looking forward to the commentary.

Whilst I kinda remember the original thread, it certainly stands a second visit. My word, there's a lot to get my head around here! Fabulous work - you must be proud of the end end result. Isn't it great when a plan comes together. And a great learning resource to boot. Thanks for reposting.

The chairs served us well this Christmas. Our friends brought the 11th chair round. made by oak furniture land or similar. I didn't say anything but the legs were made out of glued together strips of various colours as was most of it. there was a completely flat 12mm thick board of Oak (all strip pieces glued at random) as the seat and on top a thin loose cushion. And of course if you sat on it you could feel some sway in the joints.

Pleased to say all of mine are rock solid. The only negative is the 4 beech chairs have some discoloured glue lines where they were in strong sunlight in the conservatory and the PU glue went dark. No problem with the oak and if the glue did discolour you wouldn't see it. I'm the only one that has noticed on the beech so it can't be that bad. I never use PU glue now.

Robert - I have always been an advocate of jigs and templates wherever there is any likelihood of having to repeat a process and your thread justifies the time you have taken to figure it all out and then make what you needed . Thanks .

That still happens now but the conservatory is gone so only the table top remains of the beech table and that lives in the shed the rest of the year along with the single leg and framework that clamps to the main table. The beech chairs are in the bedrooms and my box room/computer room.
