Pierced bowl

This is not a completed piece but the start of a pierced bowl that I am working on.
I have first turned the bowl to an even thickness of 1/8" right the way around to the little foot. The foot is removed because if I left it until the piercing is done the bowl will be very delicate.

In this picture, all of the above has been done and the rim divided into 6 and lines brought down from that then a line around the bowl a little way down from the rim.

I used the computer to make six oval shapes with a cross through the centre and cut these out sticking these to the bowl and marking out. Having the six paper templates allowed me to see that everything is lined up and evenly spaced and the vertical line also helped with this.

It took me all afternoon to do this as well as mark out the piercings in each oval.

I only do small amounts at a time.

Well today efforts see two panels complete including using needle files to get rid of any little fluffy bits after piercing.
Still 4 more panels to do

I used one of THESE until it broke and had to carry on with one of THESE

Just the thing to sit and relax just need to take a break every so often to give the eyes and hands a rest as well as quench the thirst with a good cup of coffee :lol: :lol: :lol:

The ones I have ordered are straight cutters and a lot thinner. I find they cut better than the ones you linked to.

With other jobs like replacing hinges that had seized or broken and doing the shopping, I managed a couple more panels only two more to do before decorating. Getting there slowly.

No real progress today sanded and gave it a seal followed by ebonising spray which will need a gentle rub back and a final coat of it tomorrow before other colours are added

Due to the heat, I have not been able to do a lot but today being cooler I have managed to get the first colour onto the bowl.

This is one of those bowls that the colour is either a love it or hate it. Turned thin from Field Maple and the 6 pierced oval panels painted with iridescent paints, Measures 6" X 2 1/2"

The skill involved is enviable, the quality of the finish appears to be top notch as ever. Not sure I would want it at home but it certainly takes my eye.
