• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

No passengers and yes, it did almost go vertically.
 
That's what happens when you take a carbon fibre aircraft with no passengers, no luggage or cargo, and next to no fuel, and then over clock the engines. Normal all up weight is around 550,000 lbs, whereas empty operating weight is around 227,000 lbs. I wouldn't mind betting that they also stripped out the seats and galley equipment, reducing the weight to around 200,000 lbs. Two standard Rolls Royce Trent engines produce around 142,000 lbs of thrust, and I'm sure that limiters will have been over ridden to get this up to 160,000 lbs +. This combo will have reduced the take off and stall speed dramatically and with a bit of holding it down to gain some excess speed makes a near vertical climb out very feasible.

It is a very good question. I think it has to be a helicopter with an image-stabilised zoom lens.

Mind you the real question is would you want to fly in one ?

All Boeing 787 operators will be required to periodically deactivate the electrical system to avoid a problem with a newly-discovered software bug that could cause the aircraft to lose alternating current (AC) power, the US Federal Aviation Administration says in a new airworthiness directive.

The agency adopted the final rule after Boeing reported the results of a laboratory test showing a total loss of power is possible if the generator control units run continuously for eight months, says the FAA’s 30 April notice in the Federal Register.
 
I assumed it was a helicopter too....can you imagine what went on in the helicopter pilots digestive system when he saw that behemoth perform a vertical take-off just underneath him and along a bit :-)
