Following on from the midge thread, it seems Kent is on the front line for pollination threats.
Someone I know well has a dozen or so bee hives on a local farm. Three have just been destroyed due to European Foul Brood which is spreading rapidly this year. (It deforms the bees). Horrible job as the bees are euthanised then burnt.
Anyway, as this person had provided me with a frame of brood (unhatched bees), I notified the Bee Inspector, even though I can see no signs of EFB. Usually they would do a courtesy visit, but our local guy says they are inundated with visits to deal with Asian hornets. The government has no useful plan to deal with the highly destructive Asian Hornet invasion as although there is an effective insecticide that does not harm other pollinators, they have the frankly idiotic policy of waiting for the public to report Asian Hornet nests and then they go and destroy the nest. Bee Inspector can do roughly one a day. With licensed insecticide any pest controller could do several in a day.
