Poor standard of Maths these days!

Looking at a pack of gnocci tonight. Pizza express branded. maybe they got some of their fast food staff to compose the text for the packaging.

Interesting proportion of ingredients I thought.

The 98% is made up of 81% fresh and 17% dried potato, so a pair of brackets inserted correctly into that list would have made sense of the whole thing.

No. There is an opening bracket in front of Fresh. There is the corresponding closing bracket - as one of the two closing brackets - here (17%))

The whole thing reads:

( Fresh potato (81%), dried potato (17%) )

I'm with Roger on this. Brackets are all present and correct. It's the percentages within those brackets that are wrong, they should add up to 100%. It should read something like this: (Fresh potato (82%), dried potato (18%))

Not necessarily, there may well be some other additives to make up the remainder...like potato flavouring or something.

EDIT: actually, looking again, they add up to 98 so it looks to me like the %s they have given in () are of the 100% not of the 98.

No it does say that it contains 98% potato , the other 2% is the wheat and stuff for flavoring/preservatives.

Let me clarify:

This: (Fresh potato (81%), dried potato (17%)), pertains to this only: Potato Puree (98%), and does not pertain to all of the ingredients listed. It is telling you what the potato puree is made of before all the other ingredients (flavourings, preservatives, etc) are added.

The potato puree is made of a mixture of fresh potato and dried potato, and this mixture ratio is expressed as a percenatge which has to add up to 100%. Therefore the printed matter (Fresh potato (81%), dried potato (17%)) is wrong as it does not add up to 100%, and should be (Fresh potato (82%), dried potato (18%)).

P.S.

You should try the ingredients listings on food packages here (Switzerland). They have to be in 3 languages (by law) - German, French, Italian. Great fun (which is one reason why I don't bother to read them). To me the point is the OP did get 100% of what he bought (assuming he emptied the packet fully !
