• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

My lass (6), let's call her Child A, wanted a flowerpress and my Mrs was going to buy her one on Amazon. Really?
I might not be a proper woodworker yet but I can manage a flower press. Probably.

I bought some m8 brass bolts when I could have used SS a lot cheaper but there you go, I bought some blotting paper from France no less too but everything else was knocking about the shed. Ash and a few scraps of afromosia. Finished with gun oil.

When I'd nearly finished I thought I better make my lad something in case. He's 10 and on the phone every moment I'm not telling him to put it down so the phone stand seemed relevant. That's also had some rubber speaker feet added post pics to it so it doesn't slip around.

Obviously, very simple stuff. Too many pics of a simple project but I hope they like it. And you did say you like pics on here. ;)

Looks good! Ash is such a lovely, underappreciated timber.
 
nicely done, might not be chippendale but works for me and those letters are very well done.
next phone stand, make it thicker and put a route for the cable/plug so it can be charged and used at the same time, apparently it's a must, or so I've been informed, repeatedly, with a blunt object.
 
Love the ash, love the brass, love the design..........it's all good with me. When you said "simple project" I muttered something to myself about inlaying the letters (as I hadn't got to the final photos yet). If you'd done that then you'd never have used the word simple anywhere near this thread.

I was going to Mike. But I had a short while (for me) to make them and I'd just finished Secret Santa in the Nether World so this was all about fast. Even then I cut the A out in the first version got it spot on then drilled the hole and cracked it like an eeejit. Put it carefully down, kicked the Mrs' cat and went for a cider. Next day I drilled a hole in the blank it was sawn from. Prepped it from the inca and THEN cut the letter out. Same for t'other. What I seem to still find tortuous is not the wood stuff it's stuff like changing from a thick saw to a thin one and then setting up the inca again. Just takes time. It's fine. I enjoy it but sometimes I feel like I'm walking in treacle. It's all a good learning curve.

:D The speaker feet gave me the room, I just haven't drilled it yet. Half the point is that he sits at his desk holding it like Ebenezer Scrooge examining a penny because the cable is too short. :D

@Trevanion: I have no idea why Ash is not used more.

It's a great timber and good for almost everything except applying a finish. Unless it's chosen with care, Ash will turn a nasty shade of 'familiar' yellow. I've recently done a couple of jobs in Ash and finished them with Raw Osmo which keeps the white colour, but almost anything else isn't recommended.

My daughter bought Rob Penn's little book a couple of Christmas's ago and it's well worth a read, as is his book on his bespoke cycle - Rob

I think using 'Font' might be stronging it a bit there Andy, :oops: I just sketched them out till they looked right!
R was a hard letter to do, A was easy... Funny how the brain works.

Thanks Rob, I did the oak floor downstairs with osmo, I wish I'd used raw instead of the low sheen one I got. It looks fine I just wasn't aware of the raw finish at the time. I need to get a small pot for finishing. I'm hoping the tru oil will resist the yellowing now you mention it!
 
Looks really good, i improvised a flower press for my lass (4) when she needed pressed flowers for a school art project.

Mine was to pieces of plywood, some blotting paper, card and four Irwin Quick Clamps.

Yours looks much better!
 
Beautiful. I like the colour contrast between the two wood species. But it seems to me the bottom of the 'B' for child B is missing?

I made the world's crappiest bandsaw box from a wet log of mulberry. My 6 year old granddaughter loved it. The next one will be better, as my 1/4 blade was so blunt it burnt its way through, but now I have a new one.
