• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Reacher's back!

We too. I’ve never read the books. Daughter tells me that so far this series follows the book quite closely.

Is it bingeable or is it being released weekly? I can wait if it’s weekly

Up to ep2 now.

Oddly, I got my Android tablet to play flawlessly into the bigger TV last night, first go. So she watched whilst ironing, whilst I desoldered duff caps from a small power supply (neither task requires much attention, apart from the hot bits).

It has a nice slow burn to it*, although the ex-medic was a bit squeamish about the death of the most recent cast casualty. I'm sure there's worse to come. I also love how the humour of Child's writing comes through in the TV version (although admittedly I haven't actually read this one).

We may yet go back and watch the first two series again.

E.

PS: It's odd: she's apparently fine with people being stabbed to death with icicles...

*I mean the plot has a good slow burn (nothing to do with the desoldering, honest guv!).

No spoilers please chaps.

Andy - the books are quite fun but structurally formulaic. When you have read a few you see clearly that the author and his brother set out a plan for what is going to happen, and they don't deviate much from it. It's made a lot of money so clearly works. Charity shops are awash with them so they are easy to find for £2 each.

I think she may have the full set, most of which were freebies from a friend here.
I’m no great reader of fiction myself.

No spoilers please chaps.
Spoiler alert! Reachers survives injuries that would kill anyone else, the bad guys get their come-uppance, and Reacher rides off into the sunset with nothing but the clothes on his back and a toothbrush.

Actually something strange haapened here today. I've watched Ep 1, 2, 3. I logged in today hoping that Ep4 was available (it's not, yet, here in France), but I had set my VPN to be UK and it said that my choice was not available in my location. Change the VPN to France and all is well (except for the "E4 Coming Soon"). That didn't make sense to me.

You forgot something Steve, the bad guys can’t shoot straight, Reacher never misses.

Still a riveting watch though.

One show my wife seems to enjoy a little too much. It must be the witty dialogue or maybe just his physique.

I seem to find myself in the minority on this one having had another go at watching it.

Formulaic/flawed plot, terrible dialogue and some of the most wooden acting in the history of drama makes it pretty much unwatchable imho. It's in the same bracket as SAS Rogue Heroes which (again imho) should have been consigned to the cutting room floor for the way it mis-portrayed Paddy Mayne.

The books are proper airport / flight fodder, easy to read, pick up put down at any point and you lose nothing, boys comics without the pictures. Best consumed when bought secondhand or swapped in the old style asian book exchanges.
Amazons first season i enjoyed , second was seemingly rushed and much more wooden.

Since when did the facts ever get in the way of a good story:)
The intro, IIRC, to each episode does make it clear that it was not a history lesson.
I’d like to think that I am not the only one, having read Macintyre’s books and watched the series, that was inspired to find out more. There was an excellent obituary in the Telegraph a year or so back for example of the last “original”, Mike Sadler.

It did have that disclaimer at the start but I still think it would have been a story better told without the Peaky Blinders treatment!

What ? !!!! What ? !!! SAS Rogue Heroes is brilliant. It let the real Paddy Mayne emerge in Series 2

Just started watching Reacher series 3 on river prime. 3 and a bit episodes in and not sure I can be bothered to go any further. It's become boring and dragged out. Not helped by the fact that I read and remember the book it is based on.

Each to their own, I guess. I've not read that book (or can't remember it) so have no reference.

Not Reacher but in a similar vein I’ve watched all the Slow Horses series on Apple TV and enjoyed them immensely. Gary Oldman is outstanding. So I thought I’d give the books a go. Started with the first one and couldn’t get beyond the first chapter. Appallingly badly written, and even though I recognised the plot of episode 1 it was indecipherable.

I've persevered and got to book 3 ... agree it works better with Gary Oldman!

I'm currently rereading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo having watched the film again on a flight recently. A very good film but I find the book better. Shame Stieg Larsson only had time to write a trilogy.

I haven't tried the books (and probably won't now I've read these comments), but I'm a big fan of the Gary Oldman series

The books are definitely better than the Scandi films and the Scandi films are much better than the Daniel Craig one! The follow-on books (by different authors) that I've read seem good (e.g. The Girl in the Spider's Web), but I haven't read all of them yet. I just checked wikipedia and it looks like there are 8 of them now, so I'm a little behind.

I agree re the Scandi films Al - and of course they did three films to cover the trilogy.

The follow on books that try to emulate Larsson don't work for me. I think it's hard enough to keep the continuity of the characters and particularly so if the author also changes. Michael Connelly has done it well with the Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer/Ballard books imho.

Ah, Connelly's Bosch. Excellent books but the choice of actor for Bosch for me did not meet my imagined Bosch

Same for me with Rebus - closest in my head is Warren Clarke from Dalziel and Pascoe - stocky, blunt, antagonistic - perfect Rebus! To come full circle, most miscast individual ever was Tom Cruise as Reacher, all 5'7" of him. Alan Ritchson is much closer to the books in terms of physique!
