• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Record 043 - thingy

What Lurker said.

A vertical rod with a flat horizontal foot - and the knob to tighten it.

I use mine to make slots for box lids - including the box that houses my two 043s...

Yes. Except for "thingy" read "stop". :) Used to set the depth of groove you require.

Vann, very nice. You just need some short rods and wooden fence faces now. :D

I found some old brass barrel door bolts had barrels that were exactly the right diameter for rods.

Ooo, snazzy. Mine are rather more prosaic 7mm silver steel. Hang on, should be able to find my old 043 page somewhere with a pic... Here 'tis;

record43groover003.jpg

Such a great little plane. Makes me want to go and make some grooves now, but I can't. Bwaaaaa.

Might as well have the whole thing, as it has links to a manual and wotnot that might be useful to Phil.

Thanks people for the info, appreciated.
This one did not have a thingy.

Alf thanks for the link. Your Cornishworkshop was mentioned on an Oz site in about 2008?, but the link would not work.

It was bought at a garage sale about 30 years ago for ZAR5.00 maybe, and I thought it would look very nice and impressive hanging on the tools pegboard in the workshop. 8-) 8-)

The condition is 'ok' and it has a 3mm blade fitted. Needs to be sharpened.

Bob

Bob I humbly and profusely apologise to the team for touching said object and actually using it! :o

I will post a thread of what I did.

Phil - hanging his head in shame ...............

The trouble with Bob is if he doesn't need to wrap himself up in safety equipment in order to use it, he can't comprehend it. ;)

Depth stops do have a habit of wandering. The cutter clamp even more so, but if you've got that you're okay. A simple depth stop can be conjured up in many ways, depending on your skills. A wooden dowel would do, if you're careful when you get to towards the finished depth.

As to the website, yeah, sorry about that. Stopped making sense to have it. Luckily the Wayback Machine is our friend. :D

On a hot day, you could have one each side of the 'shop door to make it stay in a fixed location   - Rob

I've got a pair of No4s for that job Rob

The 2nd one is for when I wear out the first one ;)

Or - one is for box lid grooves, the other is for draw bottoms.

Or - I go OTT sometimes. - Luckily, 'cause my 17yo daughter is enjoying woodworking, and has taken a liking to the 043.

Cheers, Vann.

Ah, Svetlana. Never did find myself a Sergei.

Did you use BugBear's PDF of the cutter clamp, Pete? Or work off one of your other existing examples? Just curious as to how reliable the drawing is - I'm guessing, being BB, "very", but it's always nice to hear of real world results.

Hi Alf

I thing a just drew round an existing one, easy when you have one.

I bet BB's plan is accurate, but its adustable so you can be a bit out and it still works.

Pete

Come on Pete, Vann and Alf, don't you have a Rapier version or a Marples M40 (similar design but only one rod)? If not, how will you know which one is best? ;)

I think I've got a Rapier, but I can't actually remember. :eusa-think:

But - and this is a pretty shameful confession - I don't have any of the one-rod brethren. Not one. Not even a C40, D40 or 340.

If it's any help, the M40 is not a great user. That single rod lets it down badly.

So I gather. But still, given my predilection for these things, it's a bit of an omission. Thus I will continue ashamed, but not actually disappointed. :D

Well I do have a couple of Record 40, they don't get used much which should tell you all about them.

Pete

I was thinking of making a wooden version of the 43, I recon its do able, but I would probbaly need to get on with it before my eyesight gets any worse.

Interesting. Functionally, I guess something like one of these (Marples BB range, 1938 catalogue) would be a close equivalent, but I suspect you are planning something that looks a similar shape to the 043?

Yep, like a small wedge arm plow plane.

But a 1/4x1/4x1/4" (6x6x6mm in the new money) groving plane might be all you need.

Pete

My 043 doesn't clamp the 1/8 cutter at all reliably - it is just too narrow for the screw. And the screw moves the cutters around when tightening. Not a great mechanism, I bet most spend all thier time fitted with the 1/4 cutter anyway.

Sounds like you need a 1/4 cutter with the blade narrowed to 1/8.
Just the job fot a piece of GFS and Mr blowtorch.

Pete

Yes, that would sort it. Now why didn't I think of that. Or indeed, why didn't Record ?

I tend to only use the 043 for the few sizes 3/16" / 1/4" it can do well. Otherwise it's the 050C, which works well enough. Even with the 1/8 cutter.

Is it just me ... it seems it would be hard to optimise the design of these planes any better, to coil the shaving nearly around the fence rod :eusa-doh:

I use the Veritas Small Plow blades in the Record #043. The 1/8” blade works very well - for the very reason Tony mentions, that there is more width at the upper end.

Not only does the Small Plow 1/8" work perfectly, but many of the blades do - I would be comfortable going up to 1/2" Here is the 3/8" ..
