After Paul's remark about making a couple of the joints that I spied at Ightham Mote last weekend and after much deliberation I though the scissor scarf joint would not be so difficult.
At this stage only a hand saw, and small chisel were used, and I drill of course for the holes.

When fitted together it looked not half bad too

I could stop here and take the plaudits but honesty being what it is here is the 4th side
Not quite sure what happened, sawn on the wrong side of the line perhaps?
What I also did not get right was lining the holes up. I drilled the holes in one side only and then tried to offset the holes in the mating piece so they would squeeze up. Unfortunately it seemd to have the opposite effect.

Overall the resulting joint is still very strong and with a bit more practice I am sure I could do a better job. Not bad for a 1st attempt though.
