We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I had the good fortune to visit an old foundry to buy a couple of machines recently. This is one of them. Its quite a nice little thing with a bobbin on the backside.

I don't get the four plugs in the ends bells, on one end their is brass plugs pressed in and on the other end theirs pig threaded plugs.

As always I'm enjoying watching another transformation so thanks for posting.

I can kind of guess the scale of this thing from the pictures but having seen the finished motor sitting on a stool it looks huge so I'm not so sure. What diameter is the disc?

On a different note I've had this apple tree root ball sat around for a couple of years. I was hoping to stick it on the lathe and see what comes out. I wonder if this fungi will improve it or eat it

Is yours a proper Mig with a C02 or COOGAR bottle or one of those gasless ones? I've only used gas Mig in the past. Gasless seems an option for home use but I wonder if they are any good.

I'd normally turn to ebay for small amounts of sheet rubber (maybe cork too).
 
Based on 1000 rpm motor and 18" disc, my back of envelope suggests over 4500 fpm at the edge of the disc.
Surely this will burn the wood very easily and yet be running at a snails pace totards the centre of the disc.
This make me wonder how and what these mammoth disc sanders would be good for. Maybe they are more used for metal?

Robert my mig is a Clarke one with a little tube for using them hobby gas bottles. The CO2 bottles don't last long. One thing I did experiment with and was really impressed was using bronze wire for electric brazing. You have to use pure argon as a gas but the results are good for novice like me.

Bob they usually have really coarse paper on, like forty grit. If the peripheral speed is high what about wadkins 3O or 36" disc sander. They were pattern shop machines presumably for fast removal of wood

I got the foundry where I got this from to cast me some double mitres for the pk, out of bronze

Have you amazed the people at the foundry it came from by showing them the pictures of how it looks now?

And I hope you'll share what those castings look like when finished..
