• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Like many households, SWIMBO and I have been looking at ways of reducing the energy costs over the coming months. To that end, she's ordered us both an Oodie for loafing around in the evening watching TV. A lot of colleagues at the 'ospital in Salisbury where she works have them and have said they're fandabby, which means that we can keep the heating down to the bare minimum. She's also ordered a thick William Morris print front door curtain and and the requisite 'sausage dog' draught excluder is in the post.

However, it was this snippet on the BBC the other day that concentrated my mind, particularly the first bit about cooking a pair of chicken breasts. When we do consume meat, it's mostly chicken, apart from the occasional lump of venison from Waitrose. I always cook the chicken (and jacket spuds) in a standard fan oven, which is the most expensive way to do them, so SWIMBO this morning pressed the 'Go' button and ordered a microwave which is the same one as seen on Bake Off.

Problem is, we have nowhere to put it as our kitchen is pretty small and runs across the rear of the kitchen diner (which is a goodly size) but I've concocted a cunning plan. We currently have a set of cast iron Libra scales:

...which I use for breadmaking and this spot is where the microwave will sit ( I like Ricard as well), so the scales will be re-located to this rather ugly spot:

....in front of the outward opening window. The plan is to construct a shelf to a) cover this fugly gap in the worktop and b) to provide a home for the scales which won't take up too much of the available worktop space. I've already prepared a piece of true qs oak which I'm going to leave in situ:

...for a few days (in bright south facing sunlight) to see what it does. Hopefully, it'll behave itself and stay flat but if it doesn't I'll have to slice it up and veneer it over some 16mm green Medite mdf.

To be continued - Rob

I think I’ve said before how the microwave is my go to method for cooking fish. Not so sure about large lumps of meat though. I wait with interest to see how you get on.

Interesting Andy. We had a microwave decades ago which we weren't impressed with at all, but apparently the new ones are a vast improvement. We also have fish twice a week (Maritime Monday and Fish Friday :D ) which I also used to foil wrap and cook in the fan oven, so I guess the new mw jobbie will get pressed into service for fishies as well. Chips of course, cooked in the air fryer - Rob...awaiting Mr.T to advise me otherwise

Whist the oak is doing it's own thing, the first job was to make a suitable card template and check that the scale and weights fitted:

The template also needed to fit the window aperture with a suitable 'cut out' to give access to the handle. Provided the oak doesn't move, this shape should be relatively easy to template bearing cut with a router. To make it veneered with lippings needed to follow the shape would be a lot more convoluted. Doable, but more complex and convoluted - Rob

We've always used a microwave for lots of food but for years have also used a halogen cooker which is cheaper to run and takes less time to cook, allsorts from part baked bread to full size chicken. Ours isn't the same make as the one in the link and is black but so good we have another we take in the motorhome. It is yet another thing to take up space though. :D
