Scored me some free wood

The power company were doing some repairs on the Trans Pennine Trail and cut down a Hawthorne bush for access. So I did what any respectable old Womble would do and repurposed it. A bit of band saw work and wax dipping has proved quite fruitfull.

My axe cutting stump came to me in the exact same manner,on would assume a different part of the tpt though.

Id say a good score there.

Lovely! And the price is right.

Decades ago, I whittled a paperknife from a bit of hawthorn. Lovely dense, tight grained wood that holds an edge and burnishes to a natural sheen. I must go and find some more!

That's not bad. However, without seeming to top it,your post just reminded me... My Mrs's cousin (and all her neighbours) have each been gifted about 20 metres in length to the backs of their gardens that back onto the rail lines by the operator. They laid new fences behind the old ones and about a year later somewhat fuzzy letters went out passing on the land. Seems the maintenance costs outweighed the benefits for the train network? Wonder how much the entire parcel of land was worth?!? :shock: Thought it might interest some without sidetracking the thread.
Nice hawthorn though! Free wood is always a bonus.I don't turn but I do admire it.

I've dipped each end grain in molten paraffin wax. They will season in an unheated dry garage. I've had good results before, hoping I will again.

Hawthorn makes good mallets, as Andy pointed out interlocking grain makes it tough.
My marking gauges are made from hawthorn as are my spoon carving knife handles.

I found it didn’t split much when drying.
