We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Hi all
Thank you for letting me join I’m finding it really interesting.
Would anyone know how to wire a Sedgwick planer from 3 phase to single phase. I would appreciate any guidance.

Hi Neil and welcome to the Woodhaven. I am sure someone with that sort of knowledge will be along soon with some guidance meanwhile how about telling us a little about yourself and the type of woodwork you do, or plan to do. Pictures always welcome.

Nice to hear from you. I’m 63 with a fair amount of health problems, I’m a lorry driver and do woodwork as a hobby anything I make I don’t sell but if someone gives me some money for it I give to charity, but not big charities. I have autism and learning issues which can make woodworking tricky sometimes but it keeps the cog’s turning

Hi Neil, you’re very welcome, when I was in the uk I wasn’t that far from you in Barton Upon Humber. Again I’ll not confuse the three phase issue. I really like Sedgwick tools, can really recommend the table saw with its crosscut side table.
 
Spoke, I am sure one or three of our Sparkies will be along shortly, but here's a digest:
If your motor is dual voltage, 240/380V, you can convert it by switching connectors, and/or extracting the "delta point" from.the motor wiring, then adding a VFD.
The late, great, much missed, 9fingers, a.k.a. Bob Minchin had an open-source document for just such potentials (sorry, dire pun).
Secondly, you could buy a box of tricks from Transwave or the like. Expect to sell a kidney to a swarthy, evasive individual.
Thirdly, and this is the least efficient, noisiest and potentially most easy to screw up, you could build a rotary converter with the aid of a second motor. Uses twice the lecky, therefore costs X2 to run, but there are lemming-like numbers of Huge Toob videos to make your hair stand on end (Jings! Another awful pun!).
Or, finally, you could buy a single phase motor with the same mounting requirements with an adequate number of gee-gees to make a 3mm cut in 10" kiln-dried oak. Add a cornea to your kidney for this one.
 
Does the Sedgewick have two motors, one for the cutters and one for feed?
This can complicate matters

You could buy a static or rotary converter which is the easiest but can be quite pricey.

You could also get a little box of tricks called a frequency inverter or VFD. But that depends on your motors. You would need one for each motor. I have a really cheap one on my milling machine which cost about £30 from aliexpress. I've also got one on my planer which was £180
 
Thank you, Wallace. Having done it, may I say fishing out the delta point anf re-wiring it, is perfectly 'doable' - just take your time.

"Get one with "vector mode" or "sensor less flux detection" to allow power at lower speeds".

Bob once wrote the above, regarding VFD's when a fellow forumite asked for guidance. This characteristic apparently allows one to distinguish the hurriedly assembled copies (dangerous) from properly programmable (and safe) equipment. Remember to over size the current a bit on the VFD compared to the motor to cope with the inrush current. 20% extra?

Hi Wallace thanks for the information. I did buy a 7.5 kw variable phase converter but it was from a English company but came from Japan so the electrician struggled with it and decided to bother with the job.personally I thought he would have done it easy as he was a electrician on nuclear submarines.

Sounds like you've got a Sedgwick 12" MB or 16" PT if it has two motors, the 10" PT has only one motor to drive both the cutterblock and feed rollers. Having dual motors does make it more challenging to work with because it limits your options, also the feed roller motor is quite complex as it's dual-wound for the two speeds, I'm not sure how well this would behave with anything other than a true three-phase supply.

The digital inverter that you have bought should run the machine, I have a Teco Speecon 7200MA 7.5kW, which is very similar to that which I use to run my milling machine that has three motors. They output a consistent three-phase supply, so are ideal for using on multi-motor machines with complex running gear, the next best thing would be a rotary phase convertor, but these are loud, expensive to run, and take up a fair bit of room for just one machine.

Thanks for the information it’s much appreciated 1 or 2 said that 2 geared motor is the stumbling block. I think the easiest thing to do may be to sell this and look for a different machine.
