• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Sloppy hollow chisel morticer cured !

I've been struggling for ages with a cheap (and quite nasty) Fox hollow chisel morticer. :evil: :evil:

The problem is that there is significant play between the main casting and its guides which translates to about 1.5 or even 2mm at the tip of the tool. Naturally, the weight of the head tips it forward, resulting in a backward movement of the chisel, then when you start to cut, the reverse happens, the cutting pressure pushes the casting back the other way - the chisel tries to move forward - result sloppy mortices off line and not truly parallel to the sides of the work piece. The plan was to replace it, but a visiting friend suggested drilling and tapping the casting, then fitting four brass bolts to take up the slack.

Today I did just that and it works beautifully. Of course the brass bolts will wear quite fast, but I'm a hobby woodworker, so no problem to tweak it once a month or so... Thanks Geoff ! :D :D

I could not find hex head brass screws locally, so made do with csk ones, but I think I'll cut them off short and cut slots like grub screws just for tidyness.

Finshed the job now - tidied up the screws :

Notice the top RH screw is higher up the casting than the corresponding LH one. Foolishly, I assumed the casting was the same thickness throughout, but no, the centre section is hollow, only the top and bottom 20mm or so actually bear on the guides. Drilled the top RH hole first, the full 15mm or so deep, then while cleaning up the inside realised that a tiny bit lower down, the casting is only half the thickness. Enough for the screw thread, but much less to drill !
