• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I find it difficult to throw offcuts away, especially if they are nice hardwood. Here's a very simple idea using some tiny trimmings of walnut and mahogany.

The method is too simple to need wip photos. Lay a knife on a thin sliver of wood and draw round it. Chisel out a recess to match the shape. Glue another bit of wood on. When the glue has set, carve, rasp and sand away surplus wood until you have a guard just big enough to protect the blade when the knife is in a drawer or toolbox. Oil to taste.

My contribution to offcut work. This is a bit of walnut. My coffee machine handle was getting more and more loose so needed replacing. I don't have a lathe and usually just spokeshave to get close to round but it's just not as good. So thought I'd try another shape. This is tapered towards the brass end. Just planed the offcut square all round and then found the centre on both ends and drew an octagon on both ends with one bigger than the other. Then planed down to the small octagon marks. Very quick and finished with a tiny chamfer. All done with no.4 plane, a chisel, rule, compass, pencil. Nice to do something simple in one go and with a definite end. My only slight disappointment was when drilling for the thread, I wasn't quite square to the end and there's a tiny gap between brass and wood. Might need a pillar drill and lathe.

Very neat, but that's an odd looking tea strainer.

:)

I guess a nice straight grained offcut could be split, chiseled out then glued back together with an invisible join.
