• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Spring is here! First cuckoo

They are getting very rare over here - haven't heard one in years.
Our winter visitors (a pair of Blackcaps - male with black cap and female rust brown cap ) are still with us but should be flying back to Siberia (I think?) soon.
Thought I saw some House Martins the other day - just a fleeting glance so could be wrong?

Saw a junior cuckoo up in the nature reserve 2 weeks ago.

Bit late in the season to still be around here, but I am sure it will find it's way to Roger and Rod. :lol:

The Shrikes? are still moving through, crapping on everything in site.

Well he was born in Bradford [emoji3]

After I posted about the Blackcaps it seems they have gone on their migration as I've have no longer seen them.
We've had them visiting every winter for several years now but they only live for a couple of years so how do the new ones find us every year? I've only ever seen the one pair at a time.

Which is why I said "stock". His parents were immigrants from Germany I believe. Nothing wrong with that of course.
 
Still no cuckoos but the House Martins are definitely back.
The saying "One Swallow doesn't make a summer" but do several House Martins count? [emoji3]

Which reminds me to get the old plastic covers up inside the outbuilding where the swallows come. Else we end up with Defecation Alley :(
 
We are well into autumn, cool and overcast last few days.

Temp down to 8c this morning, had to start wearing a T-shirt not just pair of shorts.

The trees are throwing leaves faster than I can handle.

This is the Celtis in the back yard, it drops leaves until end May.

Mark, this is still old house.
It has been sold (at long last!)

We are going to do the property inspection on 28th April and then we will take occupation from 11 May physical move from 12 May. :D

Woo hoo! The swallows are back. Ahead of the house martins this time.
 
Wish the friggin midges would far cough!!!!

Can't wander the bloody grounds of Trimble Towers at the moment without being engulfed with the little feckers!

yup me too....eaten alive!

It wont be long now before we get the plague of those weird large beetle jobs that fly all round our front door. They're nearly as big as stag beetles but have a reddy tinge to their wing covers and monstrous great feelers. No idea what the species is but they seem to fly in slow motion....the usual destination being my wife's hair :-)

About a fortnight after they arrive....they're gone til the following year. What a life eh....arrive....shag...have maggots...die!

The absolute bane of my life in the summer are Thrips! Because we're surrounded by arable land which is usually growing either corn or rape these little bustards seem to love those crops and there's millions of the buggers. So small you can barely see them but heavy enough to make you itch all over wherever they land.

I've got 5 trapped, dead, between the 2 layers of glass in my (as was then) brand new LED TV and whenever there's a lot of white on the screen you can see their sh!tty little corpses mocking me!! Hate them! :evil: :evil:

What on earth possesses a creature to crawl into a television?!?!

May Bug or Cockchafer

Don't really get bothered with them or midges here but later in the year being surrounded by arable crops we get plagued by Thrips (Thunderbugs).
Very tiny - they don't bite just tickle and find ways of getting inside everything especially framed paintings and photos!

Tell me about it. Went out yesterday afternoon to do a spot of sunbathing in the garden and there was a bloody towel on my lounger !! :lol:
