Stuff for a 'Good Cause'

Last year I ran up another display cabinet sitting on a stand:



...but Her Grace the FUF intervened and I subsequently made the stand slightly too small, which was irritating, to say the least. As a consequence, another was made which turned out to be the right size, but the original was too good to use as bandsaw fodder, so I decided to knock up a quick veneered top for it and turn it into an occasional table:





Over the last couple of days, I've also turned to 'The Dark Side' and spun up a few bowls from offcuts that have collected under the lathe. They were too good to throw away and far to good to go on my neighbour's log burner which is fit only for gash bits of pine and plywood:



One of the bowls was made from a lump of Greengage. Bob9f gave me the 'heads up' a while back of a lady living close by who was taking one down and ''did I want the wood?" It's probably the most pleasant stuff that I've ever spun up on the lathe:

This morning, I packed up this stuff very carefully and got the bus into town and then up to Salisbury District Hospital (parking is not recommended at SDH :evil I then negotiated my way through the maze of corridors to Wessex Rehab https://www.salisbury.nhs.uk/wards-depa ... sex-rehab/ who do a fantastic job for their patients throughout the South West and London. I had a personal guided tour of the facility and they do some amazing stuff! From time to time they have sales of projects made by the patients and I mentioned that the stuff I'd brought in today could be sold to raise funds for the unit.

We all as woodworkers generate a vast amount of offcuts (I do anyway) and I hate to burn the decent bits; much better to spend a couple of days making some small projects for a reputable charity (I've done stuff for the hospice shop before) rather than lob your cherished timber onto the fire - Rob

As an aside. The last couple of times I’ve taken SWMBO to SDH, car park 8, the big one, has had the ticket machines taped up and no barriers at the exit. Not just raised but missing all together so parking is free for some reason.

That’s good Rob :eusa-clap: my local turning club does a similar thing, members turn items & donate them to the club who in turn sell them to raise money for the air ambulance

Thanks Bob; interesting to know that. Parking there is generally a nightmare and they now have number plate recognition for staff (SWIMBO) so I would have got clobbered as soon as I turned onto the site - Rob

I can imagine they were bowled over to receive items of that quality. Will they let you know how much they raised?

That first bowl that you are holding is a really fine piece of work, nothing worse than clunky turning!
I hope they appreciate what has gone into the pieces and don’t sell them too cheap.

I use a Flexipad sander in drive shaft and sand to 400g, then a couple of coats of Liberon sealer, cut back with Yorkshire Grit polish and finished with good slathering of Hampshire Sheen wax - Rob
