G’day Chaps!
It’s been a while since I’ve done anything woody, and I’m not about to embark on a new project just yet (he says) but... I am in my head – albeit a somewhat strange one... that’s the head and not the project. :eusa-whistle:
While I was in training for my PCV last August, I sort of designed a desk for myself – a way of relaxing and escaping the dreaded nerves of theory & driving tests. Well, as you guys know, I passed all of the tests and I am now in my 7th month of driving coaches for a living – honk honk I’m coming through! The horns on these vehicles are awesome.
On my days off, I’m normally zombiefied, but my body & mind are now getting use to the long and irregular hours of being a coach driver. It’s my day off today and with Mrs P away for the week, I can do what I want with no interruptions of... “Darling, don’t forget to do.... and what about the... where shall we go today... the garden needs sorting...” Etc etc - you know what I mean. :lol: Mind you, there is list on the fridge with all my meals sorted for the next week – bless. Oh I love her so..... I’m not too happy about having to prepare my lunchbox every night though! Oh well, swings & roundabouts I suppose. At least my work shirts and trousers are washed & ironed for the next week. She's a gooden!
I might be opening up another thread soon - Mrs P wants to move back up t'north! :eusa-think:
Right then, back to the desk...
I’ve always wanted to make myself a desk. Something which will also continue in the family for future generations. When I was clearing out my old workshop last August, I brought home some 80 year old pine posts which used to support ma n pa’s front porch, and some chunky old hardwood rails which are from Bournemouth beach over-cliff railing. A pal of mine had these in storage for years and he gave them to me ages ago. He thought they were perhaps mahogany, but on a closer inspection last year, they are definitely teak – very dense & beautiful, and the smell is simply divine.
Here are a few photos showing the wood late last summer when I brought it home to my newly converted hobby shop – cough cough... easy... easy.
Even the old pine is dense - look how close the growth rings are.
Much of the desk can be made from what I have, but I will also need to buy some timber for the veneer work. Veneers will include Burr oak & brown oak, tiger oak, zebrano and burr olive. The desk’s dimensions will be 1650mm long, 835mm deep and an overall height of 1060mm. There will be no MDF or plywood – everything will be solid wood with quite a bit of veneer work. The desk will house a large computer monitor and there will be no cables apart from the mains. There will be 2 small cupboards, 12 drawers and 2 secret compartments. The finish will be a matt polyurethane.
The design could evolve a bit yet, this is the preliminary if you like. Mind you, when I am going to find the time - I really don’t know. It’s just a little pipe dream which I thought I would share with you fine chaps. But as one says... never say never.
This is what I designed in M/Publisher late last August. I've tried to keep it straight lined and not too complicated like much of the stuff I've previously designed. I feel this desk will have a warming presence with a wisdom of finesse and quality oozing from the past and present.
I wish I could get on with it now.
