• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Good day all

I’m back going through my late fathers workshop and there’s a quantity of teak left over from a couple of jobs he did.
Not a huge quantity. Mainly 6x1 and 4x 1 rough sawn. 8 or so lengths from 6 -9 feet and about 40 offcuts of the same 14-18 inches
Does anyone know of someone who might be interested?

Mamy thanks phil

Boat builders.

Try Custard of this forum, for a start. Otherwise, a quick look at boatyards in Kent should produce any number of small boatbuilders who would snap your hand off.

I'd hang onto it as it's the most expensive commercial timber on the market. Even better is to make something from it as it's really lovely stuff to use (one of my faves) but doesn't take kindly to machining and will rapidly blunt all hand tool edges. It is though, worth the effort! - Rob

Its highly sought after and therefore very valuable. As a very rough guess I would think a 100 quid or more each plank.
I have one large lump of teak left, its sitting quietly in the corner waiting for a project worthy of it. 8-)

Last time I priced some was over twenty years ago, the 50mm thick sawn was £260 per cubic foot even then. I don’t think that price included VAT. I shudder to think what the current price is. As already mentioned it’s a joy to work with but the blunting effect can be very hard to live with .

The boatyard I served my yacht joinery apprenticeship in (in Lymington Hampshire) ordered teak as a "tree" (converted obviously). I was badly spoiled back in those days as "offcuts" were always needing clearing up into the car boot!
It is is pretty unique stuff, as beautiful as timber gets I recon and quite special to work.
So yes, keep it!

No, it was Berthon Boats

Shame, I have a 1 to 40 scale model built by my dad (with a little help from 10year old me) of one of their "gentlemans yachts". 8-)

Its actually one of "The little boats of dunkirk", sadly it foundered on the beach there.

Good evening all

Many thanks for the replies, if i kept all the stuff here i’d never be able to move at my place and i really don’t fore see anything i’d want to make with it , i’ll look into the boat yard front once i’ve dug it out properly.
I spent most of this afternoon converting a pile of offcuts (of timbers i’ll never be able to identify ) dad had accumulated over 30 odd years into a couple of thousand pen turning blanks. Must be around 30 different species amongst it all.
From my previous thread the other logs that i’d assumed were african blackwood turned out to be

1 african blackwood
1 Bocote
2 indian ebony.

Might have some interest in those.

All the best

Nice ebony is attractive to violin and guitar makers and usually sells well on specialist forums or I can tell you of a dealer for all your stocks, including the teak I expect (not the short bits probably). PM me if you like. He's not far from us.

Best, Adrian
