Whilst carrying out my ablutions (another visit and clear this time - too much info - sorry, but hey-ho, today is going to be good), I was thinking that back then, an animal was a symbol of wealth to the aristocrat world, but I can't see how this has got to do with that.

Spot on. Lots of fleas etc in the beds. Piglet was stuffed underneath the covers before the man went out for the night carousing. The fleas etc would take up residence on the poor piglet so that when the man returned later, he'd take the piglet out of the bed - complete with fleas.
