I have in enjoyed watching videos of coopers from across the pond on the excellent folkstreams.net. If, like me, you find yourself at a loose end, the French version :

Great stuff, which is well worth watching several times.

Even if the transfer from cine film has speeded up the action a bit, they do work impressively fast.
I especially like the accuracy of the axe work - every chop follows the one before. In just the right place, and they aren't prissy little trimmings either, they are great wallops from shoulder height.

And then the sledge hammering at head level... I'm tired and thirsty just watching!

At 4:30 the bottom cover of a barrel is fitted through the bottom of the barrel. How is that possible? If the cover can fit through a hole how can it cover/seal that hole? Pure witchcraft.

My guess would be that without the bottom in place, the barrel has just enough flexibility to deform slightly and let the cover through. Once it's fitted, the bottom would be holding it firm in a circular shape and you wouldn't be able to do the same to the top.

Note that they haven't fitted the final metal hoops at that stage, so the staves are not pulled tight yet.
