I really should have my consumer unit changed, its still got fuse wire in the breakers :shock:

I'm hoping it looks something like this...

Doing the sort of work you do Wallace, I'd stick with wired fuses as you have a bit more tolerance than MCBs which will pop at the slightest hint of a bit of an overload.
A serious problem and a wired fuse will still blow and protect the wiring.
If it is of any comfort, my workshop where I do my electrical tinkering, is all wylex wired fuses.

My HiFi amps burnt out the 16 amp mains switches their was virtually nothing left of the contacts, caused by having 500VA transformers and 60.000uF caps.

I replaced them and now leave them on all the time.

That is one solution but you could always add a current limiting resistor in the charging path which is shorted out with a relay when the capacitor voltage gets to say 90% of the target value.
This approach is used in nearly every motor inverter as they would have a similar power on surge issue. It works very well and it is also more gentle on the capacitors.

I am building their replacements with a soft start module in and some other mods that should make then sound very good.
