I am about to make a circular dining table with a veneered top. The top will be 1370mm/ 54 inches diameter with a 24mm thick substrate veneered with 2mm bandsawn veneers in a starburst pattern, The edge of the table will be fully lipped. I have attached an image of a smaller coffee table I made previously.
I would like the top to be structural so that I dont need to use an underframe as per the coffee table
My concern is that standard MDF or Birch ply substrate is only 1220mm/ 48 inches wide and so I will have to join it and the joint line will show through the veneer. So I have a couple of questions
1. Is the substrate joint likely to show through?. I could run the joint through the centre and then align the veneers so 1 of the edge joints is aligned with a veneer joint
2. I could use jumbo size sheet material (1500 X 3000mm) but this is difficult t obtain expensive and wastefull as I would only use half a sheet although I could use 12mm and laminate the sunstrate up from 2 thicknesses
3. I have some 1.5mm birch ply in 1525mm squares so I could make the substrate up from 1220mm /48 inch with a joint, apply thin ply to each face and then veneer each face
Any suggestions would be appreciated
