• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Record 52 1/2. When being opened with the handle the jaw stops and there is a repeated ‘clicking’ as the quick release lever jumps. The vice can be opened with the QR lever and pulling without issue.

Research hasn’t provided any illuminating information and I’m left wondering if its spring tension? About all I can think of.

Any suggestions please?
 
How worn are the threads (male and female parts)?

Does it tighten fully, or is it difficult to get really tight?
 
Might it be one of those cases of taking the thing to bits, cleaning everything, lubricating, and re-assembling............and without finding anything wrong it will all just work properly again?

Clean and lube will help but opening it by squeezing the quick release leaver will solve the problem.

It’s caused by the slope on the screw thread and half nut, it’s not designed to work that way.

Is it really that simple Pete?

It was stripped and cleaned not that long ago when fitted to my new bench top (about a year) and hasn’t had masses of use since then.

So take the strain off with the handle then use the lever? I do mostly but if it only neeeds opening an inch or so I tend to use the handle. I’ll re-educate myself!
 
I have 2 Parkinsons, a 14 and 15 and both do that also a previous Draper / clone 52E was exactly the same so my opinion is the same as pete's though I'm far from an expert.

Waxing the rods will help for a while.

I find unwinding works for narrow workpieces, but larger bits where the vice is open more there is a lot of weight levering the rods where they come through the back plate which causes friction.

I thought I was the only one that had this issue with the vice.

Mine is an old Record.
I need to take it off as I mounted it slightly too high. When feeding wide stuff through the router its in the way.

You might not need to take it off to fix that, depending how it’s fixed you might be able to loosen it and pack it, for your sake I hope that works, as someone on here said once it’s probably easier to tip the bench on it’s back.
And yes my vice does that sometimes as well. Like most I thought it was just me.

Well I’m glad it isn’t just me!

I thought I was special (my wife says I am!) but just ordinary.
 
Cleaned and paste waxed my record 53A today and it now winds all the way out, how long that will last I don’t know and it takes an age to do.

I will take the front jaw off, strip and clean.
Then look at the back jaw to see how I fitted it and how much packing would be needed.
Tipping it is not an option, it is up against the wall and the surface is flush with the RAS and router table.
The cabinet-boxes are all on wheels, so easy to take out.

Most threads about fitting vices get this far, then someone repeats the advice, obvious when you know it, about fitting a vice under a bench.

If you can't turn the bench over, take the weight by gripping a long bit of wood in the jaws, reaching down to the floor as a leg.

I had the top off when I fitted the vice, moved it like that to the new house and then screwed the top on the base.
Will not be repeating that exercise as I am unable to access all the screws to get it off, also 8 years older. :(
This has been added to my to-do list as a 'low priority' at this stage.
