I'm making the desk currently to go with the basic pedestal units etc that I made a while back. I'm in no rush just doing a bit now and then. I have taken a few pictures along the way and will get round to posting sometime.
For the desk surface I didn't want to use the floorboard planks and I couldn't resaw them well enough for home made veneers without one of those big sander machines. So I went to Beckton and combined a visit to Galleons Reach shopping centre with a stop at Capital Crispin Veneers.
I asked if I could take a few pictures and they said no problem.
They normally have the main shutter open and you just walk in and find someone. Today it was too windy and I entered via the office.... once they saw me and opened the door!
This is the area in front of the shutter and the guy is tidying up after I was served. They are happy to sort through the stacks to find what you want. I was after 1.5mm European Oak crown cut.
More of the same view.
The rest of the warehouse. It continues round to the left past the office. Initially the guy serving me didn't think there was what I wanted in the accessible stacks and was quite prepared to get the fork lift and start shuffling the pallets. Then he remembered where some was.
The office ornaments.
I came away with 6 10ft x 10inch for £50. Thick veneers aren't cheap but it should look the part.
The desk in progress is in the distance by the door...
So if you are around east London and want some veneers you'll find Capital Crispin very helpful.
