• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Well this is a bummer.

Transport collision hyw 11 southbound near Trout Creek. Been stuck here for two hours. Apparantly they have closed the highway both directions. I am the way to work in Toronto. Can't send pics but will when I can. For those who are interested.

Winter driving. You can expect it but never plan for it. If it is bad enough it'll be on the news tonight. ;) Hope you get going soon and get some work in tonight. Got enough gas in the tank to sit out the wait?

At least the OPP (ontario provincial police) have been up and down the shoulder checking for people in need of help.

Feel for you Duke. I drove 100 miles each way on Sunday, up to Edinburgh and back. Our clinging, dense, coastal fog ("Fret") was out in force and the home run, in the gloaming, with standing water and heavy rain, with the cloud base on top of the H.G.V.'s, was 3000% concentration. Visibility was restricted.
Ain't driving fun?

Winter driving is like rolling the dice. This is first for me, usually is the weather is bad I don't travel. Just this past Saturday I got 2 hours into the same journey and turned back due to the weather.
Sound like your nuckles were white from griping the wheel.

Just had a chat with a trucker close to you, Brandon Manitoba. He left at 9am yesterday morning and has 10 more hours driving till his destination.
Well somewhat close to you Lol.

SWMBO is going to Jersey to see her ailing sister. There are no flights. No easy trains and a bus that takes 13 hours to St Malo.
So I've rather rashly said I would take her to St Malo.
It means not wearing my contact lenses during the day on Thursday, sleeping as much as possible, and then setting of at about 10pm and driving through the night. Google reckons it's 4H20, but that assumes driving all the way at the speed limitShe sails at dawn.
I'm not looking forward to it one bit, but I don't see how else she can get there.
I shall book a hotel in St Malo. I've found one I like, but checkin isn't until 3pm. I could do with one much earlier. And apparently St Malo is not car-friendly. Still, I shall try to find a nice restaurant (somewhere that doesn't just sell pizza or burger & chips, and treat myself.
The, I hope, sleep.
Return Saturday.

Bad enough, just takes one (or most) driving too close for the conditions.
On the Boston news earlier showing a half mile pileup mixed trucks and cars. At least half of them couldn’t stop in time, must say Americans drive much closer than back in the uk, that’s when they’re not weaving in and out dangerously close.

Mmmmm….possibly. We do still have clowns on the motorway who tailgate…my pet hate. Audi drivers are up there in terms of frequency. And white van man.

Glad you got back eventually Duke.

The worst multiple fatal crash I ever had to deal with was on the M25 in fog. 40+ vehicles involved, several fatalities. All due to patchy fog and drivers just belting into the patches without first slowing down. From interviewing surviving witnesses, even in the dark the patches were visible before you could enter them, yet drivers went belting past.

I drove all over the country taking statements because the M25 is one of the routes, nobody lives close by.

One of the witnesses had total recall. It was amazing interviewing him.

You wouldn't believe the effect of traumatic memory has on people as I get them to recall what they saw, heard felt etc. Some of them were physically sick. I had to remember that I was doing this to them while interviewing them.

Even though I wasn't at the scene, I can still remember stuff I had to write down that I couldn't possibly tell you on here.

And this was over 40 years ago.

I've never not been able to get an early morning check in to a hotel, usually after an overnight flight. I've usually had to pay for the previous night, either half rate or in full, in order to get it. It's a situation that online booking systems struggle with, but hotel staff can almost always work out if you explain what you need.

The main problem with this is choosing to go to Jersey in the first place (says the Guernseyman...)!

(Just joking of course, I'm sorry her sister isn't well.)

We have similar here, Audi, Porsche, Merc, vans, mini bus taxis.
I just tap the brake pedal - surprising how fast they can back off.

Tapping the brake pedal not a good idea as the next thing that happens is that you pull over into another lane and the other driver will then overtake you then pull in front of you and slam the brakes on. Much better to take your foot off the throttle….rinse and repeat until they get the message.

Driving on the highway not an issue.
These are narrow 2 lane streets.

More a case of just touching the brake pedal for the brake lights to show... something that my father said to do... not enough to feel the brake 'bite' slightly... agree on the results 👍

Another thing my father told me was "drive as if everyone else is an idiot and will do the unexpected if your not watching out"...

I gave up playing those game forever ago. Now I just set the cruise control, weather permitting, for the speed limit. If the person behind me doesn't like it they can pass when they think it is safe. When they do I anticipate them cutting in front of me. Not my job to police their driving. I drive as though everyone is an a****** as well as being an idiot.
