• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What I have fixed today

At the back of our house, there are four UPVC sash windws, fitted about 25 years ago. I now know a bit more about what they could be like and wouldn't buy this exact sort again, but they are in place and not broken, so they're not getting replaced just yet.

However, continued exposure to sun, wind and rain has made them a bit draughtier than they used to be. A closer look revealed that the rubber seals where the lower sashes meet the cills were not up to the job.

After many hours looking through websites of people who sell such things, I thought I had found the right sort, but I wasn't sure, so I sent for a sample pack. Ten different shapes of "bubble seal" arrived, but none of them was right.

But now, armed with more knowledge of seal shapes than I ever expected to need, I was able to identify what I needed and order four metres of it from somewhere else.

It arrived promptly and I fitted strips onto all four windows this morning. It's not technically difficult to do but just for the record, do avoid windows where you have to stretch across the kitchen sink to get at the fixing groove while standing on a step, or where your varifocal glasses only offer the wrong bit of the lens as you swap between working upside down and going by feel alone.

And if anyone else needs to identify theirs, I can report that these two samples represent the same cross section and size 🙂

Not really sure that I should share this...

Sunday I had an accident with a glass pan lid slipping off and braking the knob... got out the araldite (stick everything doesn't it?) and left for 2 days. Went to assemble and the glued sections came loose - araldite hadn't gone off!

Turned to Amazon yesterday, found a pack of 4 with washers and bolts for under £4 which came lunchtime today, assembled and put away. Job done ✔️ No photo but will provide if required 😎
