• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What I have fixed today

Very pleased with myself today. I am no techie which is why I went down the Apple mac route 20 years ago (this is not a cue for an argument).
Anyway with absolutely no knowledge of Windows I managed to resurrect a Dell laptop that has not been switched on for 4 years and had reached it's limit of windows 10 which of course is no longer supported.
Eldest daughter was told she needed Microsoft PowerBi for school work. More than half the class are wedded to Macs as is she. PowerBi will not work on OSX and she was assured the browser based version does not offer the functionality required.
Powered up the Dell but would not find the Starlink wifi.
Intel network card also no longer supported and it turns out will not work with 5 ghz wifi which the Starlink defaults to.
Found an Ethernet cable to connect Dell to router.
Starlink quite cleverly allows two different wifi networks to be set up, one for 2.4ghz and one for 5.0ghz.
Only way to get network card to find the 2.4ghz wifi was to uninstall and reinstall and reboot windows. All this took about 5 hours.
Success!!
We wont know until Friday if the school WIFI works on 2.4ghz though.

Mark's The man on this sort of thing but in my experience most routers support both at the same time. My AVM routers certainly do as does the GigaClear router.

Actually you've prodded me into seriously thinking again about a DMZ in my set-up since 'smart' things seem to have proliferated chez RogerS.

In a similar vein, regular readers may recall the almost constant grief each time I updated OSX on my Mac. Seemingly dead with a black screen and zero response and no indication it was even powering up. In a rash moment I updated Sequoia as it was several versions of security updates behind. This time I let it stew all day as I now have a 'spare' iMac. But by 6pm nada. Not a flicker.

So I asked my friend - ChatGPT for help. Five minutes. Sorted. (y)
 
A similar vein to @andypand @RogerS ... my old Toshiba Qosmio X500 has been a great machine over the years but it's got to the stage that Adobe PS etc., can't update. Wasn't too much of a problem until three days ago when the Adobe updater program wouldn't itself update... So crunch time.

Decided I needed to transfer all my old emails from it to the other (not as old as Tosh) laptop. Easy easy... Thunderbird has it's own import/export option in the tools menu... Day 1, make a zip folder and transfer... Nope. Try again... Nope. Getting annoyed, angry, frustrated. Turned to (my friend 😉😜) Google - got to make it easier 😂... that's on day 2 - Nope... but we got closer trying another import/export tool but an 'add on': ImportExportTools NG. Going through the various options but obviously picked the wrong one to start with. Round and round trying different options...

This morning, I made various copies of files and folders using the different options in the NG tool. Back to Google, told it what I'd got prepared and it helped select the best one out of four - more than the help file on this add on than Thunderbird gives.

In less than an hour I'd got all my emails and subfolder emails copied across - and sorted out the correct msgFilter.dat file so Thunderbird (should) know where to put X email from X sender...

Some emails show with duplicates (with error message in subject headings) but easily sorted. Happy chap now 👍. Just now have to go through old files on Tosh and clean it out before removing the hard drives and memory sticks etc.
