Yes, I think a 25mm chisel would have been my fourth one.Agree with wot @AndyT said above but I quite often reach for wider ones (25mm and up) when cleaning out a corner(s) for say glass or a panel as the wider blade gives a bearing surface and enables a straighter line to be pared - Rob
1/4", 1/2", 3/4", and 1". The French hadn't invented the metric system when I bought my first chisels. When I sold my first piece of furniture, I treated myself to a 1-1/2" , and it's still an absolutely joy to pick it up. I've since added a 10mm and a 15mm to that collection, and unless you really are into some speciality work, that's all you'll ever need.
Funny that you say in that order. The past month or two I have been using a 12mm Japanese chisel for probably 85% of the stuff i have been doing,12mm, 19mm, 6mm, in that order.
It's a while back, but I think that's what I did. I think the first one was about 50p, new, from a tool shop, naturally.
The logic was that the 12mm was small enough for ordinary through dovetails in common softwood and I didn't get on to finer work until later.

Thanks for the photo. Its interesting to see what people use most. I do have a 3mm chisel that i mainly use to fine tune japanese plane bodies as the sides that hold the blade are very narrow. Also for kumiko work which I rarely do.I had another look at my tool chest chisel drawer when I got home.
I designed it so that it has 8 slots that will take almost any of my chisels, although only 2 will take the longest ones & the slots get a bit shorter as you go up.
Finally, it has a dedicated slot for the 3 mm one as I was certain that I'd always take that one, regardless of the other choices.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if this is for your tool chest, then designing in some flexibility is a good idea. Then you can always change your mind later about your favourite options.
