• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Had occasion to use my Quangsheng low-angle plane the other day. Blew the dust off the plane drawer handle, then blew the dust off the Quangsheng. Then realised the blade was pretty blunt.

So I blew the dust off the handle of the drawer of where I keep the Veritas honing guide and blew the dust off that. Then I went indoors to the computer to download the manual. :lol:

I prefer on/off buttons as you may have gathered although I must confess to a certain amount of satisfaction hearing that lovely planing sound as a wafer thin shaving came off.
 
For the sharpener !! But then you knew that, didn't you :D

Ummmm....not intentionally. Should I have done?

I did wonder when I started sharpening it that my new grind seemed to be showing up a curved difference between it and what was already there. ie the original seemed to be bent.
 
There was a recent "discussion" on UKW about that, I think the camber gang won.
The theory is that a cambered blade won't leave tramlines?
I slightly camber mine by putting a bit of extra pressure on the sides whilst sharpening.
It's not an issue when planing edges which are usually narrower than the blade but can be on wide boards.
But having said that I've never experienced tramlines when using my Holtey smoother or my Chinese Mujingfang? whose blades are just about flat?

Thanks for the interesting information, Rod. Not sure that I could put a camber on using the Veritas jig, TBH, but it's not an issue for me as I only use it for stuff that is narrower than the blade. I have the Sedgwick for doing proper planing ;)
 
Yes you can Roger, just press on a corner with a finger as you are push/pulling. Doesn't need much extra pressure though.
