• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Afternoon all

So I planned to start the groundworks for my shop this weekend but unfortunately my promised loan of a digger let me down so having been let down one too many times I need to bite the bullet and hire one otherwise I'll never get this bloody thing going!

My question to you good fellows and ladies is, what is the best/smallest digger I can get away with to do the job?

I don't have any access issues in terms of getting it into the garden however the footings will be tight up against the hedge so that needs to be factored into the equation.

I will be using an 18" bucket (I think...) so it needs to be able to lift that, which even the smallest seem to be able to.

I have seen them ranging from tiny ones that will fit through a standard doorway to 1t, 1.5t, 3t sizes up to much bigger.

Looking at them I reckon even the real small one would be man enough for the task but would I be making he job harder by not getting something with a bit more grunt and would I be better going for a 1.5 or 3t jobbie?

I guess another consideration is that I need to break up the existing slab so whatever I get could really do with a breaker attachment so that might limit my options...

This guy is local so thinking of belling him tomorrow to see what he has and suggests and he also has a mini crusher which might be a good thing to have to re use the existing slab as hardcore for the new slab... Www.sbondminidiggers.com.

The smaller they are, the jerkier and more unstable they are. I would suggest you go for a 3 or 4 ton machine. A one tonner is a frustrating experience.
 
I bought my digger a kubota 1.5t and it was man enough to do everything we want from it



Most rentals are new and are well taken care off and therefore NOT Jerkie, 3 or 4 ton is also very heavy on your garden. and bigger, so you need the space to move it about

for digging footings a 1.5 is more than enough, unless you have to dig for a septic tank than you need more reach to go deep

We build 3 houses with just the use of a 1.5t digger

I'll head down to the hire place and have a chat with the chaps there I think, with some photo's of the site, so they can see what I'm dealing with.
