• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. To prevent it snowing, in my part of the world, for another winter I fitted my winter tyres yesterday.[emoji3]
I got them for travels up north in winter to see my elderly Mum but she died soon after I bought them and they've never been put to the test - apart from a few journeys on slightly icy roads.
Before that we've had several "interesting and hairy" journeys travelling to Yorkshire especially in a rear wheeled BMW with modern big fat tyres!

Aye...I was down my tyre place yesterday and the guy there was grumbling about how everyone was panicking and wanted their winter tyres fitted yesterday ! Every year I wonder about getting a set and every year come spring I think 'Well, that was money saved!'.
 
I bought mine for our skiing holiday last winter and having driven them on compacted snow and ice I was delighted.
The biggest problem is knowing quite how much they affect handling etc when the temp rises a few degrees above the optimum operating temp +7degrees C- which is very often. I have watched the vids on youtube and the performance shown is quite staggering.
 
My tyre man keeps is on all year round - he drives an Audi.
As the rubber is softer he reckons the extra wear in summer is not worth worrying about.
I tried to get them fitted as new but BMW said they couldn't do it but quite happy to sell me a set of wheels and tyres for £1600!
In the end I bought a set of tyres and have them swapped for a nominal fee. (I had bought a set of wheels and winter tyres on the bay from the previous model but they wouldn't fit [emoji19]).
Last week I bought a SH set of BMW alloys from Germany, for a very, very good price, as the tyres we worn down to 3mm, so now it's a much easier task when changing.
To compound things I've just ordered a new car at a big discount ( car sales are down and dealers have great offers) which come with an extra set of wheels and winter tyres worth £1600 [emoji3]
Thankfully wheels and tyres sell well on the bay.

The thing with two sets of tyres is that they last twice as long?

2-3 cm of snow here this morning ! That focusses the mind quickly. As for tyres, my Kuga has regular tyres and I leave it that way, but I keep an old 4x4 with chunky off-road tyres for moments when the Kuga is best left at home.

It is not the extra wear but the drop in stopping distance etc when winter tyres are used above 7degrees.

I think you mean the increase in stopping distance which I'd never realised until I saw that video, thanks. The Disco is awful at stopping in the wet. So any snow and I have to be really really careful.
 
Ooops :oops: yes I did mean increase, sorry . Bit late to edit now.

In order to understand the risk I would really like to know how much the stopping distance increases with each degree rise in temperature. The vid, IIRC, just shows what happens at 16degrees C which is unlikely now before March next year but we are likely to have temps between say 7 and 12 degrees quite often.
