• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

No arrow for me. :( I can see photos OK. I'll try a different browser.

EDIT: same in Firefox but I was able to download it...Excellent although I struggled to recognise everyone. Do you have a link as to how to make one of these?
 
It's an app called "elf yourself" Roger.
It's the free version though depending on what you want it costs 79p for a vid like the one in my link.

Actually I mustn't grumble. SWMBO is off to her mothers' to cook her Christmas lunch. I will be enjoying a liquid lunch down our local and playing the Christmas Drinker game. You know the one...

"Well, that's because he comes in here most nights and you're only here once a year. Another pint, Roger?"

We'll have our own Christmas Day lunch on Boxing Day....a Japanese/Thai theme this year and nary a turkey or bit of stuffing in sight. Or sprout.
 
This will be the first Christmas I've had with my family since 1979.

It will also be one of the least materialistic. Everyone already has what they need, so we're making each other presents instead. I'm up to my eyeballs in papier mache (which I haven't made since primary school) and loving every minute of it. Wether or not my family loves the results of my labours, only time will tell :text-merryxmas:.

What are you making. We have made piñatas for the kids birthdays which is messy but great fun.
 
I'm making a Superbowl survival kit for my brother who is an NFL freak and will be up all night when it's played. There'll be some booze, tortilla chips, dips, nuts and so on which I want to present in a papier mâche beer keg. If all goes well, the papier mâche I'm building up around an unused keg will do the job. If it doesn't, he can have the keg for Christmas instead. I'll post some piccies later :-)

Everyone else in the family is going to receive handmade sweets and biscuits.
 
Yes, I'll have to cut it. Therein lies the rub. I think I'll have to cut it three times - at either end and down the centre. Then I'll have to reassemble it using more papier mâche (and probably some PVA). Not only will that weaken the structure but it will be hard to reassemble. It's by no means certain that this is going to work.
 
I smeared it with petroleum jelly. One more covering of papier-mâché tomorrow then I'll let it dry and try to cut it open, probably on Monday. Gulp!
 


Yay! The keg released successfully :) . Now I need to glue it back together, then cut it in half and paint it.

It's plain old flour and water. Tonight I reassembled it all using dabs of PVA and masking tape to hold everything in place. Then I covered the cuts with more papier mâche. It's drying out now. I also wrapped papier mâche around some pens and a bottle top, hoping to make a tap for the keg. You never know, it might work...
 
I've made a little tap to stick on the end of the keg. The lid has been separated from the main body, which I've lined to help seat the lid when it's replaced. The whole project has had its first application of undercoat.



I know it looks rough but heck, it's just a bit of fun :)
 


Finished. The photo doesn't do it justice. After a spray of varnish it looked quite presentable - but it's just a container for the booze within :)

I was astonished at how well it was received! This papier mache malarkey is great fun... but what to make next? A planer/thicknesser? Anyone got any plans? Should I try B&Q, perhaps?
 
We've cancelled Christmas in the UK permanently from now on. I did something a bit more exciting...and other stuff.
