• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I was asked to send someone two pieces of oak. What they thought was oak (the door) which is not oak. Can any one help in iding the door weneer plase. I'm thinking of a birch but am proberly wrong. I have been advised on another site that it might be cherry. (btw, i did not see the door until I got the pic yesterday and they were passing on the info from their maintanance person)

Looks like ash to me. But I'm probably on the wrong continent to make a positive ID. Definitely not cherry, unless your cherry is a lot different than our cherry.

Personally, as mentioned above, I think Elm is a real contender, I'm struggling to rule out Chestnut but I've got an entire Ash tree that came down in the winds last year and I've worked it a fair bit, it looks less like Ash than Elm. Having said that, some of the really Olive Ash heartwood has that darker look but then I've got an IKEA Birch veneer desk and its as dark as that because of the staining. It's very difficult to have any degree of certainty. Pretty much the only almost total certainty is it's not oak due to the complete lack of medullary rays.

Confusingly enough, my local Arnold Laver has some cherry veneer boards (American) and it really looks like that!!! I've talked myself out of anything definitive in fact!
 
I looked on google for images of all the above mentioned woods and all could match the door in the OP.

Not much help I know, sorry.

Many thanks for the replys. I have to be honest I bought some cherry as they mentioned it has a red hue in the door and I sent them some pictures of cherry and they have requested the cherry. Many thanks for the replies thought, tis a great help.

That's not elm.

What it is I'm not sure, but I eat on an elm table every day, so I'm very familiar with the timber, and it isn't like that photo at all.
 
To late to the party possibly, but it looks like alder to me.
