• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Well you might not believe it but I've only gone and done some bloody woodwork, of sorts...

I got sick of covering and uncovering my log burner food from under a tarp and have been threatening to make a logstore for months.

I finally had enough yesterday and after picking my little lad up from Beaver camp we set to.

About 2 years ago a friend knocked down a garage to build an extension and gave me all the roof timbers that came out of it. SWMBO wasn't happy but I said they would come in handy at some point. Well that point arrived.

I started without a plan and just cut off the bevels on the timbers and that gave me the maximum width it could be.

Started lashing things together and came up with this. 5 hours from start to finish with a 30 min break for tea. Slates recycled from the old shed that was knocked down to make way for the workshop.

I'm pretty happy with that.

I then spent an hour moving logs from under a tarp across the other side of the garden into the store before my back finally gave in. I had played a full match for my Veterans team that morning so was already tired so I tidied up and collapsed on the sofa wth a glass of whisky.

Cheers

Ahhhhh sorry, brain is still slow. No I had a couple or three through the evening

Aberfeldy was the tipple of choice last night. Not the most famous but I have family history there, and it's a decent drop.

Very jelous of the shipping container. Is that a permenent fixture?

No mate, I had to migrate out of the old workshop when Julie wanted to turn it into a playroom for the kids, then I knocked down the old sheds to build the shop, so it's storing my workshop until I move in...

Renting it, £12 ish per week.

Good idea. I could do with one on our land, but the planning laws here are so strict. :x

Nice reuse of timber and a slate roof too.
My only worry would be as there’s no back it might rack.

Yeah possibly, but it is rock solid (could only just move it on my own, using ALL my strength!!). I am however thinking of putting a back on it anyway, slatted the same as the sides, just for ease of resting the logs against the back and so they don't fall out the back if I have to move it at all...

Made sense to re-use some of the slates and only took me about 40 mins to do, and makes it looks a little more substantial ;)

put it on wheels ? it doesn't have to function, just a cart/barrow rather than a structure . Surely that would be allowed ?

bit small init Mark? Do you only burn at weekends?

Haha, as I said mate it's built based on the sizes of the timbers I had. It's just temporary until I can build the more permanent structure at the end of the workshop, but that can wait until I've moved in...

We have central heating too so the burning only really happens on really cold days and for a couple of hours at night.

We're in an AONB. Which basically means we had to get full planning permission for a small greenhouse  Which was heavily contested by the neighbours!! :eusa-doh:

Tom
I assume that the greenhouse is either at the side or front then. I think if its at the back the half your garden rule comes into play up to 20 meters from the house. And I'm pretty sure from memory you can have another 10m2 further than 20 meters?
I feel your pain planning wise, I also live in an AONB and greenbelt, though I love living where I do.

Where I am in a conservation area it is the same with an article 4 directive removing all permitted development. For years I wanted to do something with a shipping container but it’s not going to happen unfortunately.

Just a thought.
If you turn it round, so it slopes to the back, you will have more useable space.

D'oh! Very good point!! I've been leaning in and stacking it up at the back so it is full now, and my back is too knackered now to pull it all out and start again, but when it's run down a bit I'll definitely do that next time!

Nobody told me that

With a reasonable roof overhang, a careful choice of where to take the logs and frequent relocation of logs from low down at the front to further back then rain is not a problem. Snow on the other hand is right PITA.
