Yet another box :)

... This one should have been for my first green wood tools:


But I sense I made it a bit too small in the end... We'll see.

Here it is, just finished the glue-up, still need to insert the splines. I want to have them pretty narrow, so I am planning to grind a cheap chisel I just bought for that, but it'll take some time as I don't have quick access to a grinder.

Lots of things went wrong - I'll post more on that at a later stage, but here we are right now:

The original push was to give these tools some sort of "jewelry" type of status...
Let's see how it will look when finished/polished a bit - it will likely become some nice gift for my better half

A small update - I wanted to fit narrower-than-my-chisel splines on this box, so I did what I think I either read here or on "the other" UK forum: went to my local flea Market and bought a suitable 2€ chisel with the intention to grind it down to the required width.

It was my first experience with the grinder, in very bad shape I'd say:


So in the end I got a little Frankenstein of a chisel:


The marking and cutting was quite painful and slow, trying not to mess up what I already made with the box....

In the end, this is the outcome:

That looks very nice. I like the contrasting lightness of the splines.

The chisel might not be pretty, but if it does the job then that doesn't matter in my opinion.

It looks to me like you need to get yourself a diamond wheel dresser for your grinding wheel (and wear a dust mask when you use it!)

I tried to keep the chisel as constant width as I could, but my first freehand tries were too coarse, and I ended up not having it very centered
Not sure what I was thinking, though: I should have marked it from the beginning
I couldn't get a nice flat edge, either. But, admittedly, I was eager to finish the box rather than fiddling with the chisel.
It's been an interesting experience though, I think it opened a few possibilities.

I saw or read once that it's possible to grind a very narrow chisel from an old jig saw blade? I don't know if that's possible but it would be useful for example to have something less than 3mm to get into very narrow dovetail pin sockets - Rob

... One of the "doors that opened" is that of "shaping" esisting chisels in their thickness, I believe, exactly for the purpose you're considering.
I've now discovered a local flea market (1st time in 8 years living here ) and they do not have much as far as woodworking goes, but chisels are available a dime a dozen, for these kinds of experiments.

They're unusual mitre splines, not being the same length on both faces. I'm not sure I've seen that before.

That's definitely not a tool box!

... I like the idea for them to somewhat follow the length of the side they're on... Some sort of aesthetic sensibility
But being it the third box of my woodworking career, the second one with splines/45 mitres, I guess my gusto will keep evolving

Yeah! I ve made one, useful tool.
I’ll dig it out and take a photo.

Just over 1mm. I’m left handed and the bend is a result of that.
By contrast, a Marples 3mm .

My box making experience is very limited and the only splines I have cut were for frames and trivets and those were made on the table saw so I am in awe of how good that box is .
Certainly deserving of more than tool storage.

I guess wifey claimed the box - so that's it. What's going to be of it, nobody knows at the minute.

I gave it a bit of wax and I'm going to call it the day. Or, rather, the box.
