• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    The Accidental Woodworking Club

How about making a small jack plane? There's an "easy" option by making the body in two halves which makes cutting the mouth/opening a relatively easy sawing and chiselling exercise for them. Plenty of preparation and marking out as well. It could even be made from redwood with the radial...

    What stripper?

FWIW, I doubt that any strippers are up to the job now due to restrictions on ingredients used. If I was looking for a comprehensive restoration back to bare wood and you are happy to at least partially disassemble I would be looking at commercial stripping companies. Ok.... just seen...

    Jig for glueing up mitres

Yep there is a jig/clamp/whatsname for nearly everything but life is too short! I am actually in the process of making a batch of picture frames, very plain 25 x 15mm square edged pine with a clear finish... with an off white mount my colour photos look good in them. I use a fine bladed "chop"...

Options to join thinnish pieces of round wood lengthwise?

There are some types of scarf that don't require glue (being wedged) but they are rather elaborate and only suitable for thicker structural pieces. They are an interesting look up though.

Options to join thinnish pieces of round wood lengthwise?

Traditionally, joining lengthwise is done with a scarf joint of which there are several types, the simplest being two plain tapers joined. After that they vary in complexity involving shoulders/wedges/pegs etc.

What type of joints should I use for this fish tank stand?

I can understand your frustration and don't feel put off by negative comments. Here's the thing, the frame doesn't even need to be jointed on the corners if you just think of it as a plywood box with internal corner pieces made from 2x2 or 2x3 pine. That way the joints become a bit irrelevant...

What type of joints should I use for this fish tank stand?

If you must screw into end grain, one way around it is to insert dowels into the face at right angles to the screw so you are at least partially screwing into the side of the dowel.

Mixed results with new/old brace and bits I bought

Oh ok..... I was under the impression that you were talking about trying more than one bit. I must say that I have only ever used willow to hit a cricket ball.... not for woodworking!

Mixed results with new/old brace and bits I bought

One thing that you may or may not be aware of is (and this is a common downfall) is to ensure that on the cutting (lower as it is in use) side of the edge that you have a flat straight line from the edge so in other words there is no hump that hits the wood before the cutting edge.

One for Andy and Toolsnat - mainly.

On a "similar" note, when I was an apprentice I remember my Foreman advising me to always keep a stopcock wheel in my toolbox as they fit on the end of a twist bit for really tight spaces! (I was a yacht Joiner so plenty of those).
