• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Timber Moisture Content/Hardness

Yes sawn from the log though as it was a big Holly I got a friend at the local saw mill to do the cutting up

    Timber Moisture Content/Hardness

Holly is a bugger to season in my experience @HOJ the only success I’ve had with it is if it’s quarter sawn, lovely timber mind so worth the extra effort.

    Timber Moisture Content/Hardness

I think the brittleness Mike is suffering is purely down to over kilning, I made my olive ash dining table from air dried olive ash that registered a 0.0 reading on my moisture meter but the timber itself worked well with both hand tools & machines & showed no signs of brittleness. Given the...

    Template

Moisture resistant MDF every time for me when making a template, gives a crisp edge when cut which is ideal for running bearings & guide rings against. If you know of anyone locally who CNC’s MDF commercially they are usually very happy if you take away their off cuts, that’s how I get all my...

Not so much a 'build' as a 'choose one and fit it out'

Neither, Associated Timber Services bought out Boddys & in less than a couple of years ATS went bust, if the rumour factory is to be believed it was nothing to do with the Boddys site. It did me a good turn as I secured a pallet of sweet Chestnut in the subsequent auction of stock at their Honey...

    GearKlamp

I don’t own any gearklamps but I have tried them at a couple of shows & they seem very good indeed. I didn’t buy any as I can’t see them doing anything I can’t do with the varied selection of clamps I already have. I’m going to Harrogate with the intention of getting a few Bessey one handed...

    Classic Systainer Nubbins

A few years ago I wanted to make my old Elu bandsaw more portable so made a wooden base for it that would clip to a syscart. I made the nubbins from dominos for the front of the cart & cut them out of the pine base for the clips on the side of the cart. Worked really well, made lugging it...

    Toolbox

I really like the systainers with the drawers so useful particularly for cordless tools & their necessary accessories, I’ve a couple one with cordless drills & torch & one with jigsaw, multi tool & grinder. The strange thing I find in the uk is that Festool systainers are cheaper than the...

    BAILEY No7 value? Advice sought.

During & for a good while after covid second hand tool prices went ridiculously high, I think the market has settled back down now & tools can definitely be purchased at more reasonable prices

    Toolbox

I find these & these Excellent, their lightweight design means I’m basically carrying not much more than the weight of my tools, they come in varying sizes & they clip together so as long as the tools I’m transporting in them aren’t too heavy I can clip 2 or 3 together which allows me to...

Companion/ Hobbies treadle lathe, fret saw and circular saw

But there’d be a certain irony in chopping your finger off whilst at the same time powering the saw blade with your foot  😂

There’s a shelf to go on the old tank brackets when I get time  The boiler was in a smaller airing cupboard originally before I dismantled it & there were no vents into that cupboard, working on how he was happy to fit the boiler in a smaller cupboard originally I can’t foresee a problem...

An old friends daughter recently bought a terraced house built in 1900 & unfortunately try as I might I couldn’t wriggle out of doing some renovations for her  😂 So the last 3 weeks have all been about producing a functional bathroom. A couple of before & after photos (A...

    Making a hollowing tool

I you’re struggling to get the desired finish straight off the tool & doing more sanding than you’d like could I suggest you try a negative rake scraper. I made 2 from very old thick carbon steel skew chisels many years ago, these are they with my standard 1” skew to give an idea of their size...
