• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Battle of the adjustables...

A couple of years ago the chap who sold the tools at the market sold out and closed. I regret not buying a set of six clean used Bahcos from 18" down ....................................................... for £90. I have a 6", a 10" and a 15" iirc already, but it still grates.

    Raw vs boiled linseed oil

Years ago I had a brief correspondence with someone from one of the large finishes companies (I forget which) and I was told their Danish Oil was suitable for soft and hardwoods ............ except for oak. I tried to find out why but didn't get an answer.

    Acetone

It's acetates that give pear drops their smell/taste. Ketoacidosis from diabetes smells similar - if you ever get taken to hospiat wand ketoacidosis is suspected the first thing they'll do is smell your breath and/or ask if you've been to the loo does your urine smell of pear drops.

Stale bread for bread pudding? An late friend, a baker and a very kind, generous man used to sell day old baked products at half price. One afternoon an old lady asked him if he had a loaf of yesterday's bread. He replied he was sorry but all the day old stuff was gone. Oh, she said, that's a...

    Pizza Pin

Coal shovels have upturned sides, proper shovels don't. I've never seen anything other than these used for shovelling sand. Incidentally, Cornish shovels were traditionally larger than Devonshire shovels, as Cornish men were presumed to be stronger...

What type of plane is this ?

I have one of those marked ex WD 1983. It was given to me by my b.i.l. an ex dockyard ship's joiner. He had a surplus of tools as they used to buy the kit from retiring joiners etc. Yes, a different tool to the other.

    dodgy extensions

We moved into a Victorian house that had been empty for several months and decided to paint everything white until we worked our way through it. In an alcove cupboard in the kitchen there was a long loop of 2.5a cable - someone obviously intended to put sockets there at some stage. I told my...

    Numbered woodscrew sizes

I bought a job lot of boxes of screws some 45 years ago. there were 2s, 3s, 5s and 7s, strange combinations like 7/8th x 5 and 3/8th x 3. Brilliant for repair work where you just need to go one gauge heavier or 1/8th longer. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that's what I was taught.

    Walker's Shortbread

What is "tea"? Some 14 years ago we had some scaffolding moved and my wife (who was at work) asked my daughter (16 at the time) to make them a drink. She phoned back and said mum, one of them's asked for coffee. What do I do? Well, make a cup. How do I do that? I've never made coffee...
