• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I got back from Sweden a few days ago where I spent most of my time building a roof for my daughter and her husband-to-be. Magnus has built the garage up to the wall plate to my drawings, and I was relieved to find the plates level and all-but parallel. That made the roof much quicker and easier:

Two thirds of the roof has hangers and binders. It's Magnus' job to finish the strapping:

I also built a floor in the store area, which was a new idea they came up with when I was there. The problem was that there weren't convenient posts, so it had to be hung from the walls in a couple of places. It also has a step because of some sloped ground:

Magnus wanted to build it without a plinth (you guys know what I think of that!), and they have a concrete foundation post available there with steel straps. So the whole building has ended up rather high off the ground at the moment. The boarding will cover this though:

Assume timber is substantially cheaper and easier to obtain out there.
No. Really, it's ridiculous. There are trees everywhere. They export thousands of tons of the stuff every year...yet construction timber is much the same price as we pay here. Sweden is just an expensive country.

It really is by our standards. However, we've got a friend who lives in Oulu in Finland & she regularly does a 3 hour round trip drive to a supermarket just over the border into Sweden - it's worth the long drive as Sweden is a lot cheaper than Finland.

Yeah, they do that a lot out here. I really had to convince the contractor to make one for the new extension I am almost finished building. In the end we built one made of leca blocks (they use those a lot in Sweden) that we plastered over.

You can find those posts with steel straps in almost every byggmarknad, so common are they.
