• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone else having problems?

I have cleared all WH2 cookies. I have cleared WH2 pages from the cache. I have disabled Avast, my anti-virus software, and I have stopped Adblock Plus accessing WH2. I have logged out, shut down, and logged back in.

The problem persists.

Mike, Did you try a full log in on your wife's laptop.

I did skim back through the thread and could not see if you did?

A side by side comparison can be a powerful technique.
Incidentally the forum software does not seem to mind members being logged in on two devices at once.

Bob

Presumably Bob because the forum software tracks people by IP address rather than device.

I'm not sure to be honest Adrian. I can log on from multiple computers and they would all appear as 1 IP address allocated to my router.
However, I can also log in on my phone via 4G at the same time which would have an IP addy from my phone provider.
Slightly curious but very convenient!

Bob

Mike - did you disable the antivirus and ad blocker before clearing the cookies and anything to do with WHII ? And leave them off during your tests?

Interestingly the tests did not double post.

I would do it again, including restarting the router (proper disconnect, and leave off for at least 30 seconds) making sure everything is clear first.

If this fails to work then checking everything side by side with your wife's laptop (as a logged in user on both) would seem wise. Failing that someone will need to guide you through some code steps. I am too rusty to do that on a PC. Sound like there are at least two IT pros on here who may be able to talk you through it.

Double posting has only been an intermittent issue.

No, I cleared the cookies and cache this afternoon, and did the ad blocker and anti-virus this evening.

The issue persists when I am logged out and viewing as a guest.

My wife's laptop, on the same wi fi network, shows none of the issues that are plaguing me. It's not a like-for-like comparison, because she uses Bing and MS Edge.

Well not likely to be your browser Vs Edge as you've recently changed to opera and problem remains.
Looks like router/modem and BT are possibly innocent too.
I presume both your PC and hers are wifi connected or are you hardwired to the router?

Did you have the problem prior to the recent windoze update? Unfortunately you can no longer go back a version so it is a bit academic.
Just seen there is another update coming (grr) type in update in the search box bottom left

Bob

The problems started a day or two before I started this thread. And yes, both computers use the same wifi (unwired) system. The router has been turned off a couple of times, for substantial periods of time, in the last 2 or 3 days.

I've just run CC Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and an Avast full scan.......no issues, and no change. Now, I am seeing many of the emoticons over there>>> in their written form rather than as images.

OK I think everything is pointing towards your pc Mike but there I run out of suggestions

Assuming Duck Duck works as well as another more popular search engine, next time you get the message, copy and paste the text into the search engine and I'd be amazed if you did not get a few hits from others and possible suggestions.
Maybe search on wife's laptop and try things on yours - saves writing stuff down.

Exactly what I did using the EM in Mike's original post to get the Microsoft response about the network adapter driver. I don't have the expertise to validate though.

An uninstall and reinstall of the network adapter driver solved the problem.
It's rare to ever find an answer on that site as a general rule. Bits of the recommended answer may be pertinent but only bits. Resetting winsock is a possibility but reinstalling the network connection is a bit harsh (disabling miniwan is less severe).

I'm away from my keyboard until tomorrow so I'll not attempt instructions for checking for proxy server settings. In the meantime Mike you could, if possible, try plugging your PC into the router directky with a network cable if you have one... and can be arsed. Then disconnect from WiFi (it should route your traffic over the wired connection but it's generally good practice) and see if that makes any odds. It would rule out your WiFi connection hanging on to some wonky settings at the very least.

Aren't computers clever!

Bottom roght of the forum. Delete all board cookies. Clicky clicky. Log back in. Report on issues please.

I deleted forum cookies yesterday, via another route. I've just done it again, so we'll see.

I've got plenty of cables, but it will mean shifting the whole thing downstairs. I've got to dash off later for an MOT, then I've a meeting, so it's unlikely I'll have the chance to do this before lunchtime.

If it's something dodgy about the wifi connection, surely the problem would have manifested itself when I viewed the forum on my wife's machine via the same connection?

I'm asking you to do it by this route. :P

Computers are fickle beasts Mike, so in principle yes you are correct, but anything is genuinely possible.

I don't believe its your PC Mike nor is it your internet connection, the aging infrastructure of the forum (no Mark, it isn't your fault, no I don't think you need to do anything about it) is showing you under it's skirt is all.

there's a fault in the coding that stopping it it's sending data to you for certain things, when you get back I'll send you my log in details to try (then change them just after you've finished) I want to see if it's replicating on other accounts to your IP or if it's just your account. if it's just your account the it's a corruption in the database table (possibly the posts index). I asked you to clear the cookies from here to ensure the index gets updated. ;)

It's not to do with your wifi connection explicitly - rather using any other network connection that won't have bits of historical data or any number of software based "adaptors" tied to it. TL;DR: it would be a way of eliminating your normal connection from the raft of other things it could be. It sounds like a royal pain to shift your PC so I wouldn't bother.

Great idea to try another account from the same PC :eusa-dance: Although, as I understand things, Mike's used his account on the Better Half's laptop and it performed as it should. As with all things... I can so easily be wrong :eusa-shifty: That said, trying another account from the same PC would be a good thing to test first.

OK, Dave, I've cleared forum cookies using that button, logged out, re-started, etc. I still have the problem, but I think you were expecting that. So I'm in your hands for phase two of this experiment.

ok, I've just gone back and seen that I missed a post about it doing it to you as guest as well.
so that rules out my train of thought now unfortunately. no point me letting you in under my account as will act the same as guest.

I can't replicate the issue here as I don't use Opera, but could you check that "turbo mode" is switch on in opera.

Select the Opera menu button in Windows or Opera on a Mac.
Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
Select Advanced on the left side of the page.
Select Features in the Advanced submenu.
Scroll to the Opera Turbo section, and select the Enable Opera Turbo toggle switch to enable the feature.

do you have an adblocker running? (no ads on here, but with opera, depending on the details sent by the server it can think something that isn't an ad, is)

you may have more than 1 adblocker running and not realise.

Dave, I'm running in Chrome. Opera was just to test whether that made a difference, and it didn't.

I have Adblock Plus, but have disabled it for this site, and it's made no difference.

ok, then I maybe able to replicate the issue. leave it with me for an hour or so. :D

Righto - I might have some info that will help here..... or maybe not!

BT contractor has just been a total a**hole and managed to knock out my phone and internet from the cabinet in the road. No fix until at least Monday next week, so a quick dash to Tesco and bough an unlimited data sim to use in an old phone as a wifi hotspot. Log in to WH2 and no problems at all - everything shows and works as it should on this visit.

No idea if that is coincidence or tells anyone anything, but FWIW I pass it on. I do not recommend this as a solution, however able BT are at knocking out phone and internet unexpectedly!

A tiny little dot of a yellow emoticon in the middle of a page of black.

which is precisely what it should be. so that's good and bad.

That means the site is replicating correctly and you have access to the right bits of the server, so now I'm completely confused as to why you can't see the site correctly and it isn't functioning as it should.

unfortunately this points to something on your machine as you've already been told a few times. short of allowing me or one of the other's to remote in to your desktop (never, ever, ever, let anyone who you don't know personally and fully trust do this) or you start posting images of your settings pages for us to look over we are at something of an impasse.

Firstly, congratulations for not binning the effing thing... tempting as it may be.

To eliminate the next gremlin I'd check something hasn't introduced a proxy server as it sounds very much like "something" is interfering with how your PC is talking to others. It may well not be set to use one but, for the sake of eliminating possible gremlins, please stick with me...

There's several steps to getting at the Windows proxy server settings so I'll not reinvent the wheel but refer you to one of many step-by-step guides on how to do it. Go to https://thegeekpage.com/solved-err_conn ... -best-fix/ and scroll down to "#1 – Disable Proxy Settings To Fix ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error In Chrome". When you get to the last step (where you'd be unticking the boxes)pay attention to the "proxy server" section. Should the "use a proxy server for your LAN..." check box be ticked and something in the "Address" text box - keep a copy of it in notepad or similar. The reason being it could be innocent or it could be nefarious and knowing where your traffic has been going could be important. It's likely empty and no proxy server has been set so fret not.

If that doesn't sort things, the suggested next steps on the linked page above are good and worth trying:

"Solution 3: clear the browser cache" - note that this is to clear all your cached browser data and not just cookies.
"Solution 4: delete Winsock catalog entries" - if none of the above have yielded success this may be the money shot.

Ignore solutions 5,6 and 7.

Or perhaps it is the BT router and it’s relationship with Mike’s pc as it works from his wife’s laptop.

Am I right in thinking, Mike, that you do not have a smartphone to replicate StevieB’s solution.? Would be great if you could at least borrow one for the test.
If, for example, everything worked when your PC was connected through a mobile data hotspot you could tell BT their router was suspect and demand a replacement.

Maybe Nelsun could comment on the likelihood of the BT router being the problem as seems to be the case for StevieB

StevieB was having the exact same problem? I missed that :eusa-doh:

I'd think put it in the unlikely column since Mike's been fine on his wife's laptop i.e. were it the router I'd be expecting the same behaviour from any device connected to it. That's not to say it isn't... these gizmos are decidedly fickle things.

Always expect the unexpected.
Last week parts of my network were giving me <2mbs download but >10mbs upload. usually I get 25 down and 10 up.
Internet comes in via a virgin modem( with all routing capabilities disabled, out on a single ethernet cable to a wireless router/switch with a cable to no 1 son's room.
All the wireless devices were running like a dog but son's machines were seeing 25-30 down, 10 up.
Naturally I started poking the wireless router/switch re-booting and then checking settings with no improvement.
Problem went away when in desparation the modem was rebooted but that should have no differntial visibility or impact on what is connected behind it.

This isn't the 4th option on that "thegeekpage" that you linked to, is it? Number 4 doesn't mention Winsock. It also involves using code, and that's beyond dangerous in my hands.

Ah, yes - wrong page for 3 and 4 above. I had a few pages open looking for steps to get you to the proxy server settings and 3 and 4 were from here https://www.ionos.co.uk/digitalguide/ho ... ion-reset/

Clearing winsock bumf does involve running a command from a command prompt. It is a one line command you can copy and paste - but I get any apprehension about doing that. Shame you're not local as these things are decidedly easier when you can lay hands on things. The number of times these things fix themselves just by the simple act of looking over a shoulder as someone tries to show you a problem...
