• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Ebay ‘micro transactions’

I’m not a big seller on eBay and have just completed what must be the first sale in a couple of years.

The money went straight to my bank account which is a change from PayPal (told you it was a while!), no issues so far.

This morning I had what appears to be a genuine email from eBay telling me that they had just initiated two ‘micro transactions’ in order to verify my bank account. A quick check shows they have indeed sent me two payments of 2 and 7 pence.

Logging in to ebay shows that they are waiting for me to confirm arrival of those sums to complete verification.

I’m wondering why they need to do this as they’ve clearly got the account details as I’ve just been paid. Pretty sure it’s not a scam but confused nonetheless.

Anyone else experience this?

Yes, eBay went to this method a year or so ago now, I think it’s an anti-money laundering system.

Do they ever test these systems ? Why did they bother since, as you say, they've already sent you the money.

Bit like a lot of financial companies who send you your user ID in one letter and your PIN in another letter for security. Only they don't leave enough time between the two letters being sent and usually they will both arrive on the same day !

I use GoCardless both privately and for my business to collect direct debits**. If/when I change my bank account details they ask me to send them 1p via BACS to check the account details.
Good job I dont change it often!

Related observation is that Costco filling station charges my card the value of the maximum pump transaction (£90 from memory) followed by a second transaction for the cost of the fuel that I actually purchase.
That day, both are visible on my bank/card account with a related reduction in "Available Balance". The next day of so the first charge disappears without trace (not credited back as a reverse transaction).

Sainsburys fuel stations also do something similar with a smaller but non trivial amount when I use their pay at the pump machines.
