• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Looking for suggestions for 25-30mm ish solid drawn brass hinges. I'm not in in the Brusso/smart hinge region of the market but looking for something better than brassed steel with randomly positioned holes a la BnQ. Knowing that the hinge dimensions will dictate the box thickness, I want to buy some before I define the box detail dimension. They do not have to be polished. The contents of the box is more important than the box itself which does not need to be the finest woodwork, just functional.
Looking for recommendations where you have used them yourself and been pleased with them.

TIA

Simonswerk or Basta Parsons are both good quality solid drawn but hinges but I am not sure if they go below 38mm (1 1/2")

Horton Brass are good quality - I would say one notch or two down from Brusso and Smart Hinge.

I have also used these which are fine (but not in the same league).

I get my decent quality butt hinges and screws to fit from Marches. Not Brusso prices but pretty good quality; similar sort of solid drawn butts that Blackswanwood recommends above ^ - Rob

Yes I know it was 5? years ago, but the solid drawn brass hinges I got from Screwfix were everything I was wanting and expecting, no complaints at all. Various sizes too.

I've done the same in the past and been very pleased. The trouble is that Screwfix and Toolstation are both liable to change their suppliers for this sort of thing, so you need to buy some samples before deciding to stock up. And don't buy anything with thin brass folded double on each leaf.

It doesn't take long to improve the finish on brass hinges with a range of grades of abrasive paper.

I recently had a bunch of the solid brass drawn hinges from Screwfix and the quality was very poor, horrendous mill marks on the leaves, the opening and closing of the hinge ranged from very sloppy to very tight, and the countersinks weren't a conventional 90-degree angle, but something much shallower so no regular screw would sit neatly.

As @AndyT said, suppliers change and you sometimes have a good product, or a rubbish one. You can't be too fussy for something like £2 or £3 per pair, but it's nice when you do get a reasonable quality product for that price.

I think the quality was a reasonable match for the box, which wasn't going to justify £50 hinges.

Here's a closeup of one. Pencil for scale and to cover up an overcut.

I missed those when looking at screwfix as they have them listed under "Door Hinges". I think I'm sorted now but(t) I might pick up a pair on my next visit to assess the quality for future reference.

Thanks For the replies.
I've ordered some from G Johns
The hinges turned up the other day and very pleased with them. Holes drilled in line, countersinks fit the screws supplied. They have a matt drawn finish which I prefer but could be polished if needed. If I wanted to be picky, the hinge pin is of a different grade/colour brass from the leaves.
Brand it "Top Drawer Fittings" which I see is carried by a number of suppliers. 3 pairs 38 x 22 x1.3 mm plus screws all delivered for £12. Quite happy with that.
